YOUTH DEVELOPMENT - CHILDREN FROM LOW-INCOME FAMILIES OFTEN START UNPREPARED DESPITE PROGRESSING AT THE SAME RATES AS THEIR PEERS DURING SCHOOL YEAR. GAPS WIDEN EACH SUMMER AND THESE CHILDREN FALL FURTHER BEHIND. THIS IS KNOWN AS THE "ACHIEVEMENT GAP." THE Y'S ACHIEVEMENT GAP PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO SUPPORT THE COGNITIVE, PHYSICAL AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF YOUTH WHILE IMPROVING THEIR ACADEMIC OUTCOMES VIA EARLY LEARNING. THE YMCA OF GREATER ST. PETERSBURG (YGSP) IS COMMITTED TO STRENGTHENING OUR COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING CHILDREN WITH AFFORDABLE EDUCATIONAL AND ENRICHING PROGRAMS. IN 2018, YGSP'S YOUTH INITIATIVES REACHED MORE THAN 2,800 CHILDREN FROM INFANCY TO AGE 18 - MANY OF WHOM WERE FROM LOW-TO-MODERATE INCOME HOUSEHOLDS AND/OR CLASSIFIED AS "AT RISK." YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS INCLUDE: TWO HIGH QUALITY PRESCHOOLS, BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CHILDCARE OFFERED AT 23 PUBLIC ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS ACROSS SOUTH PINELLAS COUNTY, DAY CAMPS AND SPECIALTY CAMPS, SWIM LESSONS, YMCA DANCE ACADEMY, PRODIGY CULTURAL ARTS PROGRAM, "Y READS!", YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT AND THE ACADEMICS FOCUSED Y ACHIEVERS. SOME PROGRAMS ARE FREE WHILE OTHERS OFFER SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE AND MANY PROVIDE A HEALTHY SNACK OR MEAL AT NO ADDITIONAL COST.
