Mission

The Historical Society of Washington, D.C., is a community-supported educational and research organization that collects, interprets, and shares the history of our nation's capital. Founded in 1894, it serves a diverse audience through its collections, public programs, exhibitions, and publications.

About

Exhibitions: The Historical Society presents public exhibitions to make local history and culture accessible to a broad audience, and to help promote a sense of identity, place and pride in Washington, D.C. In August 2017 the Historical Society temporarily suspended exhibits and library services to accommodate a major restoration of the Carnegie Library Building. The building reopened to the public in May 2019 and exhibitions resumed in the restored space, notably the Big Picture - panoramic photos of the city's people - and the Hall of History, which includes a timeline of major events in the development of Washington, D.C. During the interim period of restoration, Historical Society exhibits and other services were presented at alternative venues, including the National Building Museum, George Washington University Museum and the Newseum.
