Exhibitions: The Historical Society presents public exhibitions to make local history and culture accessible to a broad audience, and to help promote a sense of identity, place and pride in Washington, D.C. In August 2017 the Historical Society temporarily suspended exhibits and library services to accommodate a major restoration of the Carnegie Library Building. The building reopened to the public in May 2019 and exhibitions resumed in the restored space, notably the Big Picture - panoramic photos of the city's people - and the Hall of History, which includes a timeline of major events in the development of Washington, D.C.
