Mission

The new Capital Jewish Museum will inspire visitors to connect, reflect and act: connect across families and diverse communities, reflect on the relevance of the past to today, and act on behalf of their communities and values. With its unconventional, experimental spirit, the CJM will explore the intersection of American Judaism and American democracy, and serve as a secular space for storytelling, connection, and dialogue across cultural communities in our city. Given the recent rise in antisemitism and divisive rhetoric, there has never been a more important moment to make this kind of statement about Jewish life and civility in our nation’s capital.

About

Programming in 2019 centered around museum planning, exhibition design, and public programs and outreach in support of the new museum. We moved the historic 1876 synagogue to its new permanent location at 3rd & F Streets and began restoration of the first floor; completed architectural design with SmithGroup architects; and completed concept design and began design development with teams from Evidence Design and Potion media to design the our exhibitions, public spaces and interactive experiences. We also engaged more than 2,600 adults and students in programs and events throughout the region, including walking tours, panel discussions, lectures, and workshops. See Schedule O for continuation
