About this organization
Mission
The mission of the Pinchot Institute is to strengthen forest conservation thought, policy and action by developing innovative, practical, and broadly-supported solutions to conservation challenges and opportunities. We accomplish this through nonpartisan research, education and technical assistance on key issues influencing the future of conservation and sustainable natural resource management.
About
CONSERVATION PARTNERSHIP PROJECT: THE PINCHOT INSTITUTE HAS BEEN WORKING WITH USDA'S NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION SERVICE'S REGIONAL CONSERVATION PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM (RCPP) FOR SEVERAL YEARS. IT IS AN INNOVATIVE PROGRAM THROUGH WHICH THE FEDERAL AGENCY MOST RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING TECHNICAL AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO FARMERS AND FOREST LANDOWNERS HAS TURNED TO OUTSIDE PARTNERS (MOSTLY CONSERVATION ORGANIZATIONS) TO HELP DELIVER THE WORK. IN DOING SO, THESE PARTNERS BRING NEW CAPACITY AND IDEAS TO INCREASE THE IMPACT OF FEDERAL PROGRAMS. IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST THE INSTITUTE HAS BEEN A PARTNER TO NRCS, HELPING LANDOWNERS DEVELOP FOREST MANAGEMENT PLANS. IN ALL CASES THE PLANS HAVE BEEN A MEANS TO IMPROVE STEWARDSHIP, SETTING FAMILIES ON A COURSE TO MANAGE THEIR LANDS PROFITABLY AND SUSTAINABLY FOR GENERATIONS TO COME. THE INSTITUTE HAS ALSO INTRODUCED A NEW ELEMENT, DEVELOPING PLANS THAT WILL INCREASE CARBON STORAGE--MAKING THEM ELIGIBLE FOR ADDITIONAL INVESTMENT THROUGH BOTH VOLUNTARY AND REGULATORY CARBON MARKETS. TO DO THIS WE HAVE CREATED A NEW MODEL FOR FORESTRY IN THE REGION THAT BENEFITS MORE THAN THE LANDOWNER. IT BENEFITS THE CLIMATE AND IS THE FOUNDATION FOR OUR OTHER WORK TRANSFORMING FORESTRY TO BETTER ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE, WATER RESOURCE PROTECTION, AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION--ALL IN THE CONTEXT OF SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.
