Mission
TO SAFEGUARD THE NATURAL AND CULTURAL RESOURCES OF THE RIVANNA RIVER WATERSHED.
About
THE RIVANNA CONSERVATION ALLIANCE (RCA) (FORMERLY RIVANNA CONSERVATION SOCIETY) WAS CREATED IN 1990 TO BE THE "VOICE OF THE RIVANNA RIVER". THE MISSION OF THE ORGANIZATION IS TO SAFEGUARD ECOLOGICAL, RECREATIONAL, HISTORICAL, CULTURAL AND SCENIC RESOURCES OF THE RIVER AND ITS TRIBUTARIES. OUR PROGRAMS ARE SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO BE OF BENEFIT TO THE COMMUNITY AND TO PROTECT THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT FOR GENERATIONS TO FOLLOW. RCA IS UNIQUE IN THAT IT IS THE ONLY VIRGINIA NONPROFIT TO BE CERTIFIED BY THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY (VADEQ) AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS FOR BACTERIA AND BENTHIC (AQUATIC LIFE). THIS MEANS THAT RCA'S WATER QUALITY MONITORING DATA CAN BE USED BY LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES AS ITS OWN, BECAUSE RCA USES THE SAME MONITORING PROTOCOLS AND TECHNIQUES USED BY VADEQ. RCA IS LOCATED IN CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA AND ITS FOCUS IS THE RIVANNA WATERSHED. RCA SPONSORS EVENTS AND HOSTS PROGRAM ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE WATERSHED, INCLUDING WATER HEALTH FOR THE COMMONWEALTH - A COMPREHENSIVE CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL WATER MONITORING PROGRAM CONDUCTED BY STUDENTS AND THEIR TEACHERS FROM THE HEADWATERS TO THE CONFLUENCE WITH THE JAMES RIVER. RCA SPONSORS RIVANNA RIVER SOJOURN (A TWO DAY PADDLE) CONDUCTED AS PART OF THE EARTH DAY CELEBRATIONS. RCA ALSO HOSTS RIVERBANK AND INSTREAM CLEAN-UPS, PUBLIC AND YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS, CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT AND INVOLVEMENT PROGRAMS. TEACHER AND STUDENT EDUCATION AND TRAINING EVENTS, RIPARIAN BUFFER PLANTINGS AND WATERSHED RESTORATION PROJECTS. RCA ENGAGES IN AND ENCOURAGES A CONTINUOUS DIALOGUE WITH LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS IN ORDER TO KEEP THE HEALTH AND PROTECTION OF THE RIVANNA RIVER AT THE FOREFRONT OF OUR COMMUNITY'S ENVIRONMENTAL AGENDA.
