About

In 2018, the West Kortright Centre marked its 42nd year by providing another rich season of arts and community programs for the people of the Western Catskill Mountains of New York State. With the stewardship of its 1850 country church building and bucolic valley setting in mind, the organization served over 7,800 residents and visitors and hosted 161 artists and 169 program contributors of diverse interests, backgrounds, and age groups while fostering a sense of community far beyond its remote valley. Locals and visitors alike traveled from within the county and from states away for live performances, a country arts/music/crafts/food fair, educational programs, films, ethnic meals in private homes, lectures, tours, picnics, visual arts exhibits, and a two-night festival of theater performed by children. From May through early November 2018, The Centre presented:Performances of Latin X music, Americana, participatory choir, contemporary voice and movement, French electro-swing, cuban jazz, Malian desert blues, bluegrass, chamber music and new jazz.235 hours of workshop instruction in fiction, yoga, music, acting, costuming, stage production, stone wall building and group harmony singing Childrens activities, the 27th year of Opening Acts: Young Artists Showcase, 31st annual childrens Shakespeare in the Valley performances, informal workshop performances, gallery openings, craft shows, neighborhood and member gatherings, and use of our space by community groups Exhibits of photography, paintings, sculpture, drawings, jewelry, and prints by 35 visual artists Fundraisers of lectures, auctions of antiques, services, and artwork, family photo portraits, a landscape and garden tour, a barn tour and Indonesian and Middle Eastern dinnersIn addition to the WKCs public activities, in 2018, The Centre embarked on an ambitious technology upgrade, streamlining its operational procedures and redesigning its public face, with new branding and a new website, which will be launched in early 2019.
