EXCAVATIONS TO DISCOVER REMAINS OF THE 1617-18 CHURCH, WHERE THE FIRST REPRESENTATIVE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY IN THE AMERICAS (THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY) MET IN 1619, CONTINUED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. DISCOVERIES FROM THE ARCHAEOLOGY ARE THE BASIS OF A NEW EXHIBIT IN THE MEMORIAL CHURCH THAT WAS A CENTERPIECE OF THE 400TH ANNIVERSARY OF SELF-GOVERNMENT IN AMERICA IN 2019.IN COLLABORATION WITH THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE, EXCAVATIONS ARE ONGOING AT THE "ANGELA SITE." IT IS THE ONLY PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE SITE THAT CAN BE DIRECTLY ASSOCIATED WITH ONE OF THE VERY FIRST AFRICANS TO ARRIVE IN ENGLISH AMERICA IN 1619. EXCAVATIONS AND PROGRAMS AT THE SITE WAS ALSO BE A CENTERPIECE OF THE 1619 COMMEMORATION. WITH THE SUPPORT OF A NEH SAVING CULTURAL HERITAGE COLLECTIONS GRANT, VITAL UPGRADES HAVE BEEN MADE TO JAMESTOWN REDISCOVERY'S HVAC SYSTEMS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS THAT SAFEGUARD COLLECTIONS IN OUR RESEARCH CENTER AND THE VOORHEES ARCHAEARIUM ARCHAEOLOGY MUSEUM. THE GRANT ALSO FUNDED A THOROUGH REORGANIZATION OF THE COLLECTION.WITH SUPPORT OF A NEH PLANNING GRANT FOR MUSEUMS, THE JAMESTOWN REDISCOVERY TEAM HAVE DESIGNED A NEW EXHIBIT, "FROM JAMES FORT TO JAMES CITTIE: LEGACIES OF 1619," WHICH OPENED IN APRIL 2019.A REGULAR PROGRAM OF LIVING HISTORY PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR EXPLORED THE LIVES OF EARLY ENGLISH SETTLERS, INCLUDING GEORGE PERCY, SIR GEORGE YEARDLEY, AND RALPH HAMOR, SEVERAL WOMEN SETTLERS, AND ADVENTURER AND EXPLORER ANAS TODKILL.
