About
RESILIENCE THROUGH DESIGN AND EDUCATION CLINICS (REDC)- CURRENTLY, THE ORGANIZATION'S PRIMARY PROGRAM IS OUR RESILIENCE THROUGH EDUCATION AND DESIGN CLINICS (THE "REDC PROGRAM"). ITS FUNDAMENTAL PURPOSE IS TO PROVIDE EDUCATION AND DESIGN SERVICES TO PROPERTY OWNERS, PARTICULARLY THOSE WHOSE STRUCTURES WERE DAMAGED DURING THE WEATHER EVENTS RELATED TO HURRICANE SANDY IN LATE OCTOBER 2012. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO PROVIDES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO CERTAIN QUALIFIED PROPERTY OWNERS. THE REDC PROGRAM IS A MULTI-FACETED PROGRAM SERVING THE TRI-STATE REGION. ITS OVERARCHING GOAL IS TO PROVIDE A PROPERTY OWNER WITH THE GUIDANCE AND RESOURCES TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS: "NOW THAT MY PROPERTY HAS BEEN DAMAGED, NOW WHAT? HOW DO I MAKE MY HOME AND MY FAMILY SAFE FROM FUTURE WEATHER EVENTS?" WE DEVELOPED THE REDC PROGRAM AS A THREE-DAY CLINIC HOSTED IN A COMMUNITY AFFECTED BY DISASTER. THE CLINIC HAS THREE STAGES. FIRST, WE SOLICIT AND TRAIN LOCAL DESIGN PROFESSIONALS TO DONATE THEIR TIME FOR A WEEKEND CLINIC. PRIOR TO THE CLINIC, WE HOST A TRAINING WORKSHOP TO EDUCATE AND TRAIN THE DESIGN PROFESSIONALS ON FEMA GUIDELINES, THE FUNDAMENTALS OF RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY, AND HOW TO "BUILD BACK BETTER." WE BELIEVE THAT A MAJOR PART OF OUR TASK IS TO EDUCATE THE PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITY SO THAT OUR COLLECTIVE REACH CAN MINIMIZE MISGUIDANCE. WE PROVIDE THIS SERVICE TO THE DESIGN COMMUNITY AT NO CHARGE, WITH SUPPORT AND PROMOTION BY THE LOCAL AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS (AIA) CHAPTER IN THE PREDOMINANT COUNTY IN WHICH THE PROFESSIONALS ARE WORKING. THESE SESSIONS USUALLY OCCUR DURING THE EVENING OR ON WEEKENDS TO MAXIMIZE ATTENDANCE. THE SECOND PHASE OF THE REDC PROGRAM PAIRS DESIGN PROFESSIONALS WITH LOCAL RESIDENTS DURING WEEKEND CLINICS. THE CLINICS OFFERS FREE CONSULTATIONS TO ALL ATTENDEES TO PROVIDE PROPERTY OWNERS WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO RECEIVE PRO BONO ADVICE FROM PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE TRAINED IN RESILIENCE MEASURES. THE DESIGN PROFESSIONALS' GUIDANCE GIVES RESIDENTS CONFIDENCE TO JUMP INTO THE DESIGN PROCESS. ATTENDEES ARE ALSO GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH INSURANCE AGENTS, ATTORNEYS, CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS, AND REPRESENTATIVES FROM LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL ADMINISTRATIVE AGENCIES (WHEN AVAILABLE). THESE VARIOUS PROFESSIONALS ANSWER PROPERTY OWNERS' QUESTIONS, PROVIDE ROURCES, OFFER ADVICE, AND MOST OF ALL, GUIDE THE PROPERTY OWNERS TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ABOVE ABOUT HOW TO REBUILD IN A RESILIENT, SUSTAINABLEWAY. RESIDENTS ARE EXPOSED TO HONEST DESIGN PROFESSIONALS, AND ALL PRELIMINARY DESIGN DRAWINGS DONE AT THE CLINIC ARE GIVEN TO THE CLIENT FREE OF CHARGE. THE FINAL PHASE OF THE REDC PROGRAM MODEL INVOLVES CONTINUING TO PROVIDE PROPERTY OWNERS WHO FALL INTO VULNERABLE POPULATIONS PRO BONO OR "LOW BONO" BASIC DESIGN SERVICES DURING THE HOME AND BUILDING RECONSTRUCTION PROCESS. WE FEEL IT IS IMPORTANT TO OFFER THESE FAMILIES AND SMALL BUSINESSES WITH THE SAME LEVEL OF SERVICE THAT IS AVAILABLE TO THOSE WHO DO NOT FALL WITHIN THE DEFINITION OF VULNERABLE POPULATIONS. AFTER ATTENDING A CLINIC, A PROPERTY OWNER MAY RECEIVE SERVICES FROM EITHER ONE OF THE PROFESSIONALS HE OR SHE MET DURING THE CLINIC OR FROM ANOTHER PROFESSIONAL WHO PROVIDES DISASTER-RECOVERY SERVICES.
