Mission

We teach trauma-sensitive mindfulness to young people (12 - 24 y.o.) and adult staff inside schools and the court, foster care, shelter, immigration, psychiatric & suspension systems—breaking down race/class barriers to mindfulness education. Our teaching model fosters embodied awareness and collective care through movement (e.g., yoga/qi gong), thematic discussions designed to elicit students’ wisdom and peer learning, and guided meditation. Our classes and trainings cultivate resilience and community/individual well-being; support co-regulation; and mitigate secondary trauma and staff burnout. Simultaneous work with young people and staff helps overtaxed systems become more supportive, empathic, and responsive to the interconnection between young people and adults’ well-being.

About

In 2018, Lineage served approximately 1,075 young people and adults across all program areas, working in 20 sites across NYC, including youth incarceration facilities, public schools, long-term suspension schools, a family homeless shelter, and a program for young people in residential mental health treatment. The Lineage Model is a 3-part teaching strategy (meditation, theme-based group dialogue, and mindful movement) designed to tap into young peoples innate wisdom, cultivate attention and focus, increase self-confidence, promote empathy, and reduce impulsivity. below, we describe our 2018 accomplishments for our three largest program services-education, justice, and professional development traingings. Education Programs: Our education-focused work reaches students in long-term suspension schools and under-resourced public schools. In 2018, we continued our work serving students in long-term suspension in Manhattan and the Bronx. And we provided mindfulness programs in public middle and high schools in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx, reaching students with academic, truancy, and behavioral challenges. Justice Programs: Peer-reviewed research on Lineages work with court-involved youth shows that our classes may reduce the likelihood of justice re-involvement. In 2018, we worked with young people navigating incarceration and detention in Brooklyn and the Bronx. Professional Development Trainings: Frontline staff (teachers, social workers, justice-system staff, etc.) who work with young people can experience burnout and secondary trauma, with ripple effects on our students. In response, we offer professional development workshops to staff at many of the institutions we serve. These trainings focus on mindfulness tools that can be used to support these professionals self-care and and enhance the work they do with young people. In 2018, we delivered 12 professional development trainings and 4 public trainings that served more than 155 adults.
