Mission

The mission of the Mesa Refuge is to provide time, space and support for writers and other creative people to address the pressing issues of our time, with a concentration on the environment, the economy and social equity.

About

In 2019, the Mesa Refuge continued to expand the number of weeks dedicated to hosting residencies through the DIY retreat program. Recent program initiatives included a fellowship in long-form journalism, a fellowship for a teaching artist and several cohorts where three residents work independently on related themes. Cohorts included the following groups: Human Rights Fellows, Native American writers and Refuge for Activists. Public programs included live presentations by several Mesa Refuge alums whose books had been published and regular interviews with current residents on KWMR. The Mesa Refuge continued to work on diversifying our board, staff and residents, through an active series of recruitment, nominations and invitations. We had our most effective fundraising year to date, raising over $300,000 from individuals, foundations and earned income.
