About

EDUCATION (EMPOWERING CHILDREN) - OVER 650 CHILDREN FROM PRESCHOOL TO CLASS 10 (HIGH SCHOOL) RECEIVED TOP-QUALITY, ENGLISH-MEDIUM EDUCATION THROUGH SHINING LIGHT ACADEMY (SLA) LOCATED IN GILGIT, PAKISTAN. APPROXIMATELY 20% OF OUR STUDENTS WERE FROM THE CHRISTIAN MINORITY COMMUNITY AND ATTENDED SLA ON A SCHOLARSHIP BASIS. OUR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM ENABLED 22 MINORITY CHRISTIAN CHILDREN TO ATTEND LOCAL SCHOOLS,INCLUDING SLA, FROM PRESCHOOL THROUGH UNIVERSITY THAT OTHERWISE WOULD NOT RECEIVE AN EDUCATION. EIGHT ADDITIONAL STUDENTS RECIEVED FULL SCHOLARSHIPS TO ATTEND COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THEIR FAMILY'S HISTORY. THIS HAS RESULTED IN OVER A DOZEN CHRISTIAN FAMILIES THAT ARE NO LONGER LIVING IN POVERTY, HAVE BUILT THEIR OWN HOMES AND HAVE ENDED THE CURSE OF POVERTY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. ADDITIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE: a)TEACHERS - OUR SLA TEACHING STAFF HAS INCREASED FROM 39 TO 44 TO ACCOMODATE SCHOOL EXPANSION AND GENDER SEPARATION AS REQUESTED BY THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. WITH THE ADDITION OF THE NEWLY ACCREDITED HIGH SCHOOL, RECRUITMENT EFFORTS HAVE INTENSIFIED TO FIND EXPERIENCED TEACHERS FROM BOTH CENTRAL PAKISTAN AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. SEVERAL MASTER TEACHERS WERE HIRED TO PROVIDE QUALITY EDUCATION IN MATH, URDU AND SCIENCES AND TO PROVIDE MENTORING FOR LESS EXPERIENCED TEACHERS. IN ADDITION, THEY WILL SERVE AS SUBJECT SECTION HEADS TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE FOR THE ORGANIZATION AND WILL ASSIST THE PRINCIPAL IN CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENT. b)SLA PRINCIPAL - A QUALIFIED, PROFESSIONAL, EXPERIENCED PRINCIPAL FROM LAHORE, PAKISTAN WAS HIRED IN FEBRUARY 2018 TO LEAD SLA IN ITS MISSION TO PROVIDE HIGH QUALITY, AFFORDABLE, ENGLISH MEDIUM EDUCATION TO THE STUDENTS AND ADULTS IN GILGIT, PAKISTAN. UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP, SLA PLANS TO ESTABLISH A NEW SCHOOL IN FUTURE YEARS THAT WILL BE THE MODEL THAT ALL OTHERS ASPIRE TO. c)TEACHER TRAINING - SLI DEVELOPED AND DEPLOYED A TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM AND CONDUCTED ASSESSMENTS IN OCT/NOV 2018 FOR SLA TEACHERS AND STAFF IN GILGIT, PAKISTAN. SLI VOLUNTEERS MET WITH VISITING TEACHING STAFF FROM A LOCAL SCHOOL IN GERMANY TO DISCUSS COLLABORATION EFFORTS FOR THE NEWLY DEVELOPED SLA TEACHER EXCHANGE PROGRAM TO BE LAUNCHED IN 2019. SLI WILL CONTINUE DEVELOPING TEACHER TRAINING MATERIALS WITH PLANNED DEPLOYMENT TO THE GUJJAR SCHOOLS (SEE DEVELOPMENT BELOW) AND POSSIBLY GOVERNMENT SCHOOL TEACHERS IN 2019. THIS IS PART OF SLI'S CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM TO DEVELOP THE CAPACITY AND PROVIDE SKILLS TRAINING TO SHINING LIGHT COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION (SLCDO) STAFF AND THE PEOPLE OF NORTHERN PAKISTAN THROUGH FUTURE SLCDO LEADERS. d)SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - IN 2018, SLI PROVIDED SCHOLARSHIPS FOR PRE-SCHOOL, ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE, AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WITH PLANNED EXPANSION IN 2019. NEARLY $33,000 WAS ALLOCATED FOR THE FOLLOWING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS: i. PRIMARY EDUCATION - PRE-SCHOOL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL MINORITY, CHRISTIAN STUDENTS (22) RECEIVED $17,576 FOR TUITION, BOOKS, UNIFORMS AND OTHER EXPENSES. MOST OF THE RECIPIENTS ATTEND SHINING LIGHT ACADEMY. ii. SECONDARY EDUCATION - EIGHT CHRISTIAN STUDENTS RECEIVED $15,272 FOR COLLEGE TUITION, FEES, BOOKS AND PERSONAL EXPENSES. THESE ARE THE FIRST CHRISTIAN STUDENTS TO ATTEND COLLEGE IN GILGIT, PAKISTAN AND IN THE HISTORY OF THEIR FAMILIES. MANY ARE VOLUNTEERING AT SLA WITH PLANS TO BECOME EMPLOYED TEACHERS OR ADMINISTRATORS UPON GRADUATION THROUGH OUR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. e)NEW CLASSROOMS - THREE NEW CLASSROOMS STARTED CONSTRUCTION IN 2018 WITH COMPLETION TARGETED FOR MARCH 2019. THESE CLASSROOMS ARE NECESSARY DUE TO INCREASED ENROLLMENT CAUSING SOME CLASSES TO EXCEED THE DESIRED CAPACITY OF 25 STUDENTS. IN ADDITION, GENDER SEPARATION FROM 6TH GRADE ONWARD HAS ALSO INCREASED THE NEED FOR NEW CLASSROOMS. CONSTRUCTION OF THESE CLASSROOMS WILL IMPROVE EDUCATION QUALITY BY LIMITING CLASS SIZE TO NO MORE THAN 25 STUDENTS. SLI PROVIDED $10,000 FOR THE PURCHASE OF CLASSROOM EQUIPMENT, FURNITURE AND ESSENTIAL MATERIALS FOR THESE CLASSROOMS AND OTHER NEEDS. f)LAND ACQUISITION - SLA IS ON LEASED PROPERTY THAT WILL EXPIRE IN 2021 WITH LITTLE CHANCE OF RENEWING THE LEASE AGREEMENT. IN ADDITION, THE CURRENT LOCATION IS NOT ADEQUATE FOR THE INCREASED ENROLLMENT OF 650 STUDENTS. LAND ACQUISITION, NEW CONSTRUCTION AND RELOCATION REMAINS THE TOP PRIORITY FOR 2018 AND BEYOND. THIS WILL ENABLE SLA TO FURTHER IMPROVE ITS QUALITY EDUCATIONAL SERVICES AND ENSURE SUSTAINABILITY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE WAS ACCOMPLISHED IN JULY 2018 WITH THE RELEASE OF FUNDS FROM THE SALE OF THE GILGIT EYE HOSPITAL TO SLI FOR THE PURCHASE OF LAND FOR A NEW SCHOOL. SEVERAL PLOTS HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED AND A FINAL DECISION FOR THE NEGOTIATION AND PURCHASE OF LAND IS ANTICIPATED BY MARCH 2019.
