CONNECTING FOR KIDS (CFK) IS A LOCAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION WITH A MISSION TO PROVIDE EDUCATION AND SUPPORT TO FAMILIES IN CUYAHOGA AND LORAIN COUNTIES WHO HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT THEIR CHILD. WE SERVE ALL FAMILIES, INCLUDING THOSE CHILDREN WITH AND WITHOUT FORMAL DIAGNOSES WHO ARE 12 YEARS AND YOUNGER.

FAMILY PROGRAMMING DURING THE 2018-2019 PROGRAM YEAR, CONNECTING FOR KIDS HOSTED NINE SPEAKER SERIES PROGRAMS FEATURING LOCAL, PEDIATRIC PROFESSIONALS GIVING PRESENTATIONS ON VARIOUS CHILDHOOD TOPICS INCLUDING SOLUTIONS TO ANGER, POSITIVE PLAY, SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT IN GIFTED KIDS, PICKING EATERS, APPLYING FOR GRANTS, POTTY TRAINING, SENSORY STRATEGIES, ADHD AND CHANGES TO OHIO WAIVERS. COFFEE AND CHAT IS A SUPPORT GROUP FOR FAMILIES FACING SIMILAR STRUGGLES. SEVEN SESSIONS WERE HELD FROM SEPTEMBER 2018 THROUGH JULY 2019. FACILITATED BY A LICENSED INDEPENDENT SOCIAL WORKER, TOPICS INCLUDED SPECIAL NEEDS AND DIFFERENT CULTURES, COPING WITH FEAR OF THE FUTURE, FOOD ALLERGIES, DOWN SYNDROME: SUPPORT AND RESOURCES AND DEALING WITH A DIAGNOSIS. DURING BOTH SPEAKER SERIES AND COFFEE AND CHAT PROGRAMS, FREE, SUPERVISED CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES ARE AVAILABLE. ELEMENTARY EXPERIENCES ARE HANDS-ON TRAINING PROGRAMS DESIGNED FOR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN (AGES 7-12 YEARS) WHO ARE STRUGGLING. THE TOPICS EXPLORED DURING THE 26 SESSIONS INCLUDED MUSIC, TECH TOOLS, COOKING, MANAGING ANGER AND EMOTIONS, LEARNING FUNCTIONAL SKILLS, MINDFULNESS, AND SEVERAL SESSIONS DEALING WITH SOCIAL SKILLS. MUSIC THERAPY & MORE IS A HANDS-ON PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR CHILDREN (AGES 0-6 YEARS) WHO ARE STRUGGLING IN AN AREA OF DEVELOPMENT AND TEACHES FAMILIES HOW TO USE MUSIC TO IMPROVE THEIR CHILD'S MOTOR, COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL SKILLS AS WELL AS BEHAVIOR. LED BY A BOARD-CERTIFIED MUSIC THERAPIST, THERE WERE 71 SESSIONS DURING THE 2018-2019 PROGRAM YEAR. TEACH ME TO PLAY IS A PLAY-BASED PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN (18 MONTHS-6 YEARS) TO PRACTICE COMMUNICATION SKILLS, SOCIAL INTERACTIONS AND WAYS TO ENCOURAGE POSITIVE BEHAVIORS. DURING THE PROGRAM YEAR, 35 SESSIONS OF TEACH ME TO PLAY WERE HELD. A NEW ADAPTED PLAYGROUP (WHICH WILL BE CALLED PLAY & SAY MOVING FORWARD) STARTED IN SPRING 2019 FOR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN (AGES 0-6 YEARS) TO ALLOW FOR ADDITIONAL PLAY AND SOCIAL SKILL OPPORTUNITIES FOR THOSE NEAR SOLON. A TOTAL OF THREE SESSIONS WERE HELD IN MARCH, APRIL AND MAY. IN ALL, MORE THAN 2,700 ATTENDED CONNECTING FOR KIDS PROGRAMMING FROM FALL 2018 TO SUMMER 2019 IN SEVEN CITIES INCLUDING ELYRIA, LAKEWOOD, LORAIN, MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, PARMA, SOLON AND WESTLAKE. CONNECTING FOR KIDS STAFF MEMBERS ARE PRESENT AT ALL PROGRAMS TO ANSWER QUESTIONS AND EVEN PROVIDE FOLLOW UP AFTER A PROGRAM TO THOSE THAT NEED ADDITIONAL RESOURCES. OUR STAFF HANDLES AN AVERAGE OF EIGHT TO NINE PHONE CALLS FROM FAMILIES EACH DAY ASKING FOR HELP.
