LAKE COUNTY AMBULANCE SERVICE (LCAS) IS A NONPROFIT 501(C)(3) ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDES PART-TIME, ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT AMBULANCE SERVICE IN LAKE, COOK, AND ST. LOUIS COUNTIES IN MINNESOTA, ALONG THE NORTH SHORE OF LAKE SUPERIOR. COMMUNITIES SERVED INCLUDE: BEAVER BAY, BRIMSON, FINLAND, ISABELLA, KNIFE RIVER, SILVER BAY, AND TWO HARBORS. THE PRIMARY SERVICE AREA COVERED IS 1,535 SQUARE MILES WITH AN APPROXIMATE PERMANENT RESIDENT POPULATION OF 11,200. MOST OF THE SERVICE AREA IS VERY RURAL WITH THE LARGEST CITY HAVING A POPULATION OF 3,735 RESIDENTS. THE SERVICE AREA'S POPULATION INCREASES GREATLY WITH HEAVY TOURISM WHICH IS VERY PROMINENT IN THE SUMMER AND FALL SEASONS.CURRENTLY, LCAS STAFFS TWO STATIONS WITH THE BASE OF OPERATIONS IN THE CITY OF TWO HARBORS WITH ONE SUBSTATION IN SILVER BAY. ONE AMBULANCE IS STAFFED AT BOTH LOCATIONS 24 HOURS A DAY. AN ALS RAPID RESPONSE VEHICLE IS STAFFED IN TWO HARBORS. CURRENTLY LCAS HAS 42 EMPLOYEES TOTAL WITH A MIXTURE OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIANS AND PARAMEDICS. A BOARD OF DIRECTORS, WITH A TOTAL OF 7 MEMBERS, AND THE MEDICAL DIRECTOR OVERSEE THE SERVICES OPERATIONS. IN 2018, LCAS RESPONDED TO A TOTAL OF 1,221 CALLS FOR SERVICE. LCAS PROVIDED ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT (ALS) SERVICES TO THE PUBLIC OF LAKE COUNTY BY MAINTAINING THE NUMBER OF REGULARLY SCHEDULED PARAMEDICS. LCAS RECEIVED A $500,000 STIPEND FROM LAKE COUNTY TO ASSIST WITH THE STEADILY INCREASING COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH OUR SERVICE. THIS WILL ASSIST US WITH PAYROLL AND PURCHASING EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES. LCAS CONTINUED STAFFING A 3RD AMBULANCE AS A FULLY PAID POSITION WHEN THEY WERE ABLE - WHEN THEY HAD AVAILABLE STAFF AND BUSY HOLIDAYS. REVENUE WILL BE GENERATED THROUGH CPR INSTRUCTION TO THE PUBLIC BY OUR ORGANIZATION. EXPENSES RELATED WILL BE TO CERTIFY OUR INSTRUCTORS AND ON-GOING COSTS FOR NECESSARY DISPOSABLE SUPPLIES. SEVERAL STAFF MEMBERS HAVE BECOME AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION CPR INSTRUCTORS, ALLOWING US TO OFFER CPR CLASSES TO HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AS WELL AS LAY-PERSON CPR FOR THE PUBLIC. LCAS EDUCATION SPECIALIST BECAME CERTIFIED IN INSTRUCTION OF PEDIATRIC ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT WHICH ALLOWS LCAS TO REFRESH AND TRAIN IN-HOUSE AS WELL AS CERTIFY AND REFRESH OTHER HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS IN THE REGION. IN 2018 LCAS SENT ONE STAFF MEMBER TO A COMMUNITY PARAMEDIC PROGRAM AS PART OF A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT TO IMPROVE HEALTH IN THE REGION AND BRIDGE THE GAP IN HOME HEALTH IN THE COUNTY.
