Mission

VOICES FOR RACIAL JUSTICE WORKS TO ADVANCE RACIAL, CULTURAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE IN MINNESOTA THROUGH ORGANIZER AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING, POLICY RESEARCH AND STRATEGIC CONVENING WORK.

About

RACIAL EQUITY POLICY: IN 2018, VOICES FOR RACIAL JUSTICE CONDUCTED AN ASSESSMENT OF OUR RESEARCH AND POLICY TOOLS WITH LEGISLATORS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS. A QUESTIONNAIRE WAS SENT TO 270 LEGISLATORS IN BOTH DIGITAL AND HARD COPIES. AN ONLINE SURVEY WAS SENT TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS, LOBBYISTS, POLICY ADVOCATES, LOCAL HEALERS AND ORGANIZERS. WE FOLLOWED UP THESE ASSESSMENTS WITH LEGISLATORS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN INDIVIDUAL AND SMALL GROUP GATHERINGS TO LEARN HOW OUR POLICY TOOLS COULD BE IMPROVED TO REFLECT THE NEEDS OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES. WE ALSO HELD MONTHLY POLICY GATHERINGS WITH LOBBYISTS, ORGANIZERS, HEALERS, AND LOCAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS THROUGHOUT THE 2018 LEGISLATIVE SESSION AS A WAY FOR DIFFERENT GROUPS TO COME TOGETHER TO DEMYSTIFY POLICY, TO LEARN ABOUT POLICY, AND TO SHARE STORIES ABOUT HOW THEIR WORK CONNECTS TO POLICY. IN JULY, WE HELD A GATHERING AT THE EASTSIDE FREEDOM LIBRARY IN SAINT PAUL IN COLLABORATION WITH THE PEOPLE'S MOVEMENT CENTER, A LOCAL ORGANIZATION OF HEALERS THAT WAS ATTENDED BY 60 PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY. THE GATHERING FOCUSED ON HEALING AND POLICY. WE ALSO BEGAN DISCUSSIONS WITH CIVIC EAGLE, A LOCAL ENTREPRENEURIAL TEAM THAT CREATES DIGITAL LEGISLATIVE TRACKING TOOLS TO DEFINE A COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIP TO PILOT THEIR LEGISLATIVE TRACKING TOOL DURING THE 2019 LEGISLATIVE SESSION. ORGANIZING TRAINING: VOICES FOR RACIAL JUSTICE HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR ITS RACIAL JUSTICE ORGANIZING TRAINING FOR 25 YEARS. WE COMPLETED TRAINING COHORTS IN 2018 IN GREATER MINNESOTA WORTHINGTON AND DULUTH, AND IN THE NEXT YEAR WILL BE LEADING EDUCATION PARENT COHORTS IN COMMUNITIES IN MINNEAPOLIS ST. PAUL, WITH THE GOAL OF BUILDING SUSTAINABLE ORGANIZING AND LEADERSHIP CAPACITY GROUNDED IN THOSE COMMUNITIES. IN ADDITION, WE HAVE A FORTHCOMING TRAIN THE TRAINER TOOLKIT THAT BRINGS AN ARTS AND CULTURE LENS TO THE ORGANIZING TRAINING.PRISON JUSTICE: WE WORK WITH COMMUNITIES IMPACTED BY THE SYSTEM OF MASS INCARCERATION TO ADVOCATE FOR CHANGE IN PRISONS AND IN THE CULTURE OF CIMINALIZING ENTIRE COMMUNIITES. WE ARE BUILDING NETWORKS OF FORMERLY INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES OF INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS, AND CURRENTLY INCARCERATED PEOPLE WHO WORK TOGETHER TO CHANGE THE NARRATIVE ABOUT WHO IS IN PRISON AND WHAT INCARCERATION IS DOING TO OUR COMMUNITIES. IN 2018 WE REALEASED THE REPORT: UNFIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION: HEALTH AND. HEALTHCARE IN MINNESOTA PRISONS.
