The Gary Economic Development Corporation GEDC leads the City of Garys efforts to develop real estate, attract new businesses, expand and retain existing businesses, job creation, and increase the quality of life for City residents. In 2016, GEDC established a relationship with United Parcel Service, which holds job fairs to employ Gary residents as package handlers at its Hodgkins, IL facility. GEDC also partnered with the City of Gary for Life, an anti-violence initiative to reduce crime and improve residents quality of life. GEDC continued its efferts towards the development of the University Park Neighborhood and Campus Plan to redevelop a 7.5 square mile footprint surrounding Indiana University and Ivy Tech Community College. GEDC continued its relationship with Carmeuse Lime and Stone to invest 10M into a green facility, and with Garmong Construction to build industrial space in the Buffington Harbor area of Gary.
