About

SEE SCHEDULE OTHE HOLDEN ARBORETUM IS A 3,500-ACRE OUTDOOR MUSEUM OF TREES AND WOODY PLANTS THAT PROMOTES THE BEAUTY AND IMPORTANCE OF TREES AND WOODY PLANTS TO CREATE SUSTAINABLE AND HEALTHY COMMUNITIES IN THE GREAT LAKES REGION. IN ADDITION, THE ARBORETUM HAS 1,489 ACRES IN CONSERVATION EASEMENTS AND 29 ACRES AT THE LEACH RESEARCH STATION IN MADISON, OH. THE ARBORETUM IS ACCREDITED BY THE AMERICAN ALLIANCE OF MUSEUMS. THE HOLDEN ARBORETUM IS INTEGRATED WITH THE CLEVELAND BOTANICAL GARDEN UNDER THE HOLDEN FORESTS & GARDENS BRAND. THE CLEVELAND BOTANICAL GARDEN IS AN URBAN BOTANICAL GARDEN LOCATED 25 MILES FROM HOLDEN ARBORETUM IN THE CITY OF CLEVELAND. TOGETHER, THE TWO ORGANIZATIONS REPRESENT THE 14TH LARGEST PUBLIC GARDEN IN THE COUNTRY. THE MISSION OF THE TWO ORGANIZATIONS IS TO CONNECT PEOPLE WITH THE WONDER, BEAUTY, AND VALUE OF TREES AND PLANTS, TO INSPIRE ACTION FOR HEALTHY COMMUNITIES. THE COMBINED PROGRAMMING OF THE TWO INSTITUTIONS CREATES MORE OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPACT, BY LEVERAGING TWO PHYSICAL CAMPUSES, DIFFERENT GEOGRAPHIES, AUDIENCES, AND HISTORICAL TRADITIONS. THE HOLDEN ARBORETUM FULFILS THIS MISSION THROUGH CORE PROGRAMMING THAT FOCUSES ON SCIENCE & CONSERVATION, EDUCATION, HORTICULTURE, AND GUEST EXPERIENCE & ENGAGEMENT. SCIENCE & CONSERVATION: THE RESEARCH STAFF PUBLISHED (13) PEER-REVIEWED PAPERS IN FISCAL YEAR 2019 (FY19) IN INDUSTRY JOURNALS AND GAVE (13) PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS LOCALLY AND NATIONALLY. THE STAFF ORGANIZED AND HOSTED THE 10TH YEAR OF THE SCIENTIST LECTURE SERIES, WHICH INCLUDED TALKS BY HOLDEN SCIENTISTS AND LOCAL AND NATIONAL PEERS. STAFF SUPPORTED (12) UNDERGRADUATE INTERNS AND HELD ITS 4TH SEARCH (SYMPOSIUM FOR ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH) FOR UNDERGRADS, INCLUDING STUDENTS FROM CWRU, CLEVELAND STATE, AND UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO. OVER 120 STUDENTS IN GRADES 7-12 RECEIVED INSTRUCTION FROM THE SCIENCE & RESEARCH TEAM THROUGH 1-HOUR EDUCATION PROGRAMS. ONGOING RESEARCH PROJECTS INCLUDE STUDIES ON BEECH LEAF DISEASE; BEECH BARK DISEASE; HEMLOCK WOOLY ADELGID; RHODODENDRONS; SOIL ECOLOGY; FOREST ECOLOGY; AND GENETICS. 1,700 TREES WERE IDENTIFIED AND MONITORED FOR GROWTH ACROSS NORTHEAST OHIO IN FY19 ALONE. WITHIN CONSERVATION AND COMMUNITY FORESTRY, THE WORKING WOODS PROGRAM AND DEMONSTRATION SITE INCLUDES ONGOING CLIMATE AND PHENOLOGY RESEARCH; COLLABORATIONS WITH CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY; AND A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH OHIO DIVISION OF FORESTRY TO USE THE SITE FOR WORKSHOPS IN FORESTRY. VOLUNTEERS PLANTED 120 NATIVE, FOOD-PRODUCING SHRUBS FOR RESTORATION AND AGROFORESTRY DEMONSTRATION ON THE SITE. A SIMILAR SITE FOR TRAINING DOES NOT EXIST IN NORTHERN OHIO. BY REFOCUSING AND RESTRUCTURING THE PROGRAM, AND LEVERAGING GREATER PARTNERSHIPS, THE PROGRAM HAS BEGUN TO TAKE ON NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE. THIS IS EVIDENCED MOST RECENTLY BY AN AWARD FROM THE USFS TO ESTABLISH A FOREST HEALTH COLLABORATIVE FOR THE GREAT LAKES REGION AT HOLDEN ARBORETUM. THE COMMUNITY FORESTRY PROGRAM ALSO PILOTED TREE CORPS, AN ARBORICULTURE APPRENTICESHIP AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM, IN FY18, FY19, AND FY20. THE TREE CORPS OFFERINGS WILL BE EXPANDED IN FY21. HORTICULTURE & COLLECTIONS: THE HORTICULTURE & COLLECTIONS STAFF MAINTAIN, CULTIVATE, AND CARE FOR OVER 16,000 PLANTS IN THE LIVING PERMANENT COLLECTION AT THE HOLDEN ARBORETUM. IN COLLABORATION WITH THE RESEARCH STAFF, THEY MANAGE ANOTHER 3,138 PRESERVED RESEARCH SPECIMENS AND ASSOCIATED DATA, AND NEARLY 5,700 TREES AND PLANTS IN TEMPORARY RESEARCH COLLECTIONS. THE HORTICULTURE TEAM MAINTAINS THE 243 ACRES OF DEVELOPED GROUNDS IN THE "CORE" VISITOR AREA OF THE ARBORETUM, ENSURING THAT GUESTS ENJOY A SENSE OF WONDER AND BEAUTY EVERY TIME THEY VISIT. THE HORTICULTURE TEAM WORKS CLOSELY WITH THE GUEST EXPERIENCE STAFF TO DEVELOP INTERPRETATION OPPORTUNITIES THAT SUPPORT INFORMAL EDUCATION AS WELL AS COLLABORATE ON SPECIAL EXHIBITS AND EXPERIENCES. STAFF PARTICIPATION IN AND VOLUNTEER TRAINING FOR THE POLLINATOR PARTNERSHIP CONTINUED, WITH THE GOAL OF INCREASING MONARCH HABITAT.
