A NETWORK OF PARENTS WORKING TO BUILD AND ENGAGE PARENTS AND OTHERS TO ENSURE EVERY CHILD HAS A CHAMPION.
About
Detroit Parent Network (DPN), the regions premier parent engagement organization, equips parents/families with information and training that empowers them as Champions for their children and their community. DPN educates and equips parents with the training and the tools they need to be better parents and influence schools, community and civic leaders to ensure the success of All children. DPN is also known for equipping parents as Advocates in their local schools to meeting with state and national legislators to advance educational equity and policies that support children and families. DPN provides its services and support within a multi-generational lens that has impacted the lives of tens of thousands of Detroit parents, grandparents and children of all ages. Through nurturing and supportive staff and activities, DPN builds the capacity of parents as people and caregivers through love, leadership and advocacy. DPN is a member driven organization with 1,200 members in 2018 throughout the metro area. DPN members pay a small annual fee of $10 as a personal investment in a large array of services and opportunities for themselves and their children. Via a new grant by the Fisher Family Foundation, DPN is piloting an Early Childhood Enrichment and Educational Field Trips model in the Brightmoor Community. Working with 16 early care providers, parents and more than 600 children, DPN exposed and enriched the Brightmoor Quality Initiative families with trips to parks, museums and cultural venues that for many of the families they had never been exposed to. Similar to this grant where all the parents are members, DPN offers benefits of membership such as, access to free and low cost theater and sports events, field trips to educational and recreational settings and a monthly Member Mixer where adults and children learn, grow and support one another. DPN is known for its Peer to Peer Training that equips parents in numerous content areas such as early literacy, child-family policy and community outreach. DPNs Pathways to Literacy a homebased program which provides a home library and parent coaching for families with children 1.5 4.5 years old is led by trained Parent Literacy Coaches. DPNs Pathways to Literacy curriculum is also taught in Spanish. The work of these trained coaches with the support of DPN staff has proven to positively impact child-adult literacy and engagement based on evidence based evaluation tools and an external evaluator. Some 400 families have received Pathways to Literacy over the years. The success of the program is being further enhanced to positioning it to become an evidence based program and be part of the small number of programs known to build literacy in the home in the State of Michigan. In addition to its core work in providing trainings and support groups such as Men of DPN and the Mommy Group, DPN increased its focus on education and careers for family economic mobility. For a number of years through Project Graduation, DPN was conducting academic support and college tours for youth and parents. While that grant was reduced by the funder for one community, DPN pivoted to a more robust model of engaging colleges, employers and workforce partners. In August 2019 DPN launched a proof of concept entitled Community Pathways to Opportunity and began partnership with the Detroit College Access Network and the Regional Chamber of Commerce, Siena Heights, Oakland and Wayne State University and Wayne Metro (the Countys Community Action Agency). Community Pathways to Opportunity received funding from both the Ford Fund and the GM/Regional Chamber to begin planning a community education and career HUB in the DPNs lower level along with training pare At its Lothrop building DPN creates spaces for parents and their children to organize, learn and support each other with weekly and monthly events. DPN has an array of parents and collaborations with numerous organizations multiple geographical neighborhoods. Programs such as Head Start, Public and Charter Schools, Churches and Community Centers enlist DPN to provide Love and Logic and parent leadership and advocacy training. Several new partnerships have begun with the Detroit Health Department, Karmanos Cancer Institute and the University of Michigan School of Public Health as a result of the new focus on the health and wellbeing and reducing health disparities. This includes mental health, nutrition along with physical and dental health. DPN staff and parents were treated to a Health Promotions 101 training by the University of Michigan to help DPN become a stronger advocate for health promotion and health equity. As a result of its strategic partnerships DPN has emerged as a city-wide Parent Engagement Champion in the Hope Starts Here initiative to improve the lives of families with children pre-birth to age eight. Additionally, DPN without funding, began workshops to inform parents about the Third Grade Reading Law to help galvanize the community around the importance of early literacy. Working as a member of the Design Team of the Community Education Commission DPN trained and equipped parents in the Mayors initiative, the GOAL line, and implemented focus groups and conducted extensive outreach with Detroits first city-wide School Guide. DPN continues to grow and is excited about its expansion and array of new partnerships to create conditions for All children to thrive. We recognize that parents are central to building the necessary solutions for Detroit and the nation.
