WE ARE A COMMUNITY-MOBILIZATION MOVEMENT THAT RECRUITS, TRAINS AND PLACES MENTORS;AND BUILDS PROGRAMS THAT PROVIDE WELLNESS AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT FOR BLACK CHILDREN. SINCE 2006, WE HAVE RECRUITED MORE THAN 132,000 VOLUNTEER MENTORS.

About

The HBCU Rising: A Campus-Public Schools Literacy and STEM Mentoring Initiative This innovative, curriculum-based initiative uses a three-tiered group-mentoring model in which corporate volunteers in STEM-related professions coach college students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) who work in teams to coach middle schoolers and support school teachers in science and math classes in under-resourced public schools. It is the mission of the HBCU Rising to address the underrepresentation of people of color in scientific fields in our country, by providing engaging opportunities for economically vulnerable students to learn more about STEM subjects in a culturally grounded, experiential, fun and accessible way. The HBCU Rising aims to fill the pipeline for unfilled STEM-related jobs, for which the representation of African American participation is by far the lowest of any ethnic or racial group. Our program addresses these challenges, while at the same time supporting economically vulnerable college students, who are fairly compensated as mentors and provided workforce-development training to better prepare them for 21st-century careers.
