Behind The Book's mission is to inspire New York City public school students to love reading by bringing accomplished authors and their books into classrooms and creating rich, innovative literacy programs. Our programs take place in underserved public schools, are part of the class curricula and meet the Common Core Learning Standards.

BEHIND THE BOOK(BTB) develops engaged readers and writers in underserved NYC public schools by designing and delivering programs that are multi-disciplinary, culturally responsive, and promote deeper connections to books and their authors.BEHIND THE BOOK IS THE ONLY NYC literacy NONPROFIT PRODUCING programs that include TWO WORKSHOPS WITH THE AUTHOR OF THE BOOK being studied, AN ART WORKSHOP, FIELDTRIPS AND HELP WITH RESEARCH AND WRITING FROM ADULT VOLUNTEERS.Programs are SUSTAINED OVER A UNIT AND ARE CUSTOMIZED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF EACH CLASS WHILE ADHERING TO THE CURRICULUM AND COMMON CORE LEARNING STANDARDS. IN LAST YEAR'S PROGRAM EVALUATIONS,85% OF TEACHERS REPORTED INCREASED MOTIVATION TO READ FROM THEIR STUDENTS, AN INCREASED MOTIVATION TO WRITE IN 80% OF STUDENTS AND 81% EXHIBITED INCREASED SELF-CONFIDENCE IN READING AND WRITING SKILLS. IN ITS 16 YEAR HISTORY, BTB HAS SERVED OVER 17,000 STUDENTS AND DONATED MORE THAN 53,000 BOOKS.IN FYE 19 BEHIND THE BOOK PARTNERED WITH 17 SCHOOLS IN 83 CLASSROOMS CONDUCTING 52 WORKSHOPS WITH 1,895 STUDENTS.
