About

Land Acquisition & Nature Preservation - In 2019 The Highland's Nature Sanctuary, Inc. (HNS) (dba the Arc of Appalachia) expanded its preserve holdings by 79 acres thus bringing the total natural project areas purchased since the organization's inception in 1995 to 6,792.54 acres; 6,527 acres of which are actively monitored and managed by HNS. Total natural area acquisitions through 2019 by the organization total 114 separate land acquisitions over 24 years in 21 preserve regions. New land acquisitions in 2019 included a 39-acre riparian corridor along the Scioto River in Ross County, OH and 40-acres of forested hillside in the Hocking Hills region of Hocking County, OH. In 2018 and 2019, HNS provided a land holding service for Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks by conducting a quick campaign and emergency purchase of a pivotal property known as Fern Gully in Hocking County that is surrounded on three sides by Clear Creek Metro Park. In 2019, HNS sold the 80.1-acre Fern Gully to Franklin County Metro Parks, and then returned the income to HNS' revolving land acquisition fund on behalf of future land buying endeavors. HNS was very active in 2019 in pursuing new land acquisitions. HNS negotiated, raised private funds, and pursued grant funding for a total of nine new properties which are scheduled to consummate in 2020. HNS continued in 2019 to monitor two conservation easements totaling 286 acres. Hiking Trails. During 2019, 45 miles of hiking trails were stewarded for public enjoyment in the Arc of Appalachia Preserve System (The Arc of Appalachia is the registered dba for HNS). New trail systems were established at both Rock Run Preserve and Samson/Obrist Woods Preserve, and are scheduled to open to the public in 2020. A trail head parking lot was installed at the Ohio River Bluffs preserve in preparation for a new public trail system to open in 2020 or 2021. Work continued on opening McKimmie Cave to the public at the Highlands Nature Sanctuary with the installation of railings and concrete steps on the access trail. Six interpretive displays were designed and created, and will be installed at Junction Earthworks Preserve's main trail in 2020. Land Stewardship. A major land stewardship priority in 2019 continued to be the removal of invasive plants on Arc of Appalachia preserves. Selective mowing of a 20-acre complex at Junction Earthworks continued during 2019, revealing to the public, the location of nine ancient earthwork foundations still intact beneath the earth's surface. Guard rails for preventing 4-wheeler access at the Ohio Hanging Rock were purchased to help better secure the preserve from unauthorized vehicular entry
