Mission

SHELTER MUSIC BOSTON PRESENTS CLASSICAL CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERTS, OF THE HIGHEST ARTISTIC STANDARDS, IN HOMELESS SHELTERS AND OTHER SHELTERING ENVIRONMENTS.

About

IN 2019, SHELTER MUSIC BOSTON (SMB) PERFORMED NEARLY 80 CONCERTS FOR NEARLY 1,500 AUDIENCE MEMBERS AT BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS, CASPAR EMERGENCY SHELTER, THE DIMOCK CENTER'S WOMEN'S AND MEN'S RECOVERY PROGRAMS, HOUSING FAMILIES, PINE STREET INN - SHATTUCK SHELTER, PINE STREET INN - STABILIZATION, AND PINE STREET INN - WOMEN'S INN. BEYOND OUR SERIES OF TRANSFORMATIVE MONTHLY CONCERTS AT EACH SITE.SMB EXPANDED OUR ARTISTIC PROGRAMMING WITH TWO SPECIAL PROJECTS. FIRST, AS A NEW COMPONENT TO OUR CHILDREN AND FAMILY SHELTER PROGRAM, SMB ESTABLISHED A COLLABORATION WITH THE BOSTON LYRIC OPERA (BLO) TO DELIVER OUR OPERA CREATION PROJECT TO THE AFTER SCHOOL CHILDREN SERVED BY HOUSING FAMILIES. THROUGH A SERIES OF 5 WORKSHOPS, SMB AND BLO WORKED WITH THE KIDS TO CREATE A SHORT OPERA WHICH THEY PERFORMED AT THE END OF THE PROJECT. THE HIGHLIGHT WAS THE LEVEL OF INVESTMENT AND ENGAGEMENT BY ONE OF THE YOUNG PARTICIPANTS, IN PARTICULAR. PLAYING "THE GRANDFATHER" IN THEIR STORY, ONE YOUNG BOY CAME READY TO PERFORM HIS PART WEARING GREY IN HIS HAIR AND A FAKE MUSTACHE, DESPITE THE FACT THAT NO SETS OR COSTUMES WERE CREATED FOR THIS PROJECT. ADDITIONALLY, HIS MOTHER AND LITTLE BROTHER CAME TO WATCH AND THE LITTLE BROTHER WAS ALSO WEARING A MUSTACHE! THE CHILDREN LOVED CREATING AND PERFORMING A STORY THAT THEY DEVELOPED THEMSELVES. LAST YEAR, SHELTER MUSIC BOSTON ALSO PERFORMED THE WORLD PREMIERE OF "FLORENCE COMES HOME," A CHAMBER OPERA WRITTEN ABOUT EARLY 20TH CENTURY AFRICAN AMERICAN COMPOSER FLORENCE PRICE, AS WELL AS "FINDING FLORENCE," A SHORTER VERSION OF THIS OPERA FOR OUR CHILDREN'S AUDIENCE. BOTH OPERAS WERE WRITTEN BY LOCAL COMPOSER, FRANCINE TRESTER, AND WERE COMMISSIONED BY SHELTER MUSIC BOSTON TO TELL A PORTION OF PRICE'S LIFE STORY AS THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN TO HAVE HER WORK PERFORMED BY A MAJOR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. "FLORENCE COMES HOME" RECEIVED CRITICAL ACCLAIM FROM LOCAL MUSIC REVIEWERS AND WAS PERFORMED IN SEPTEMBER 2019 AS PART OF OUR FLORENCE PRICE PROJECT, WHICH ALSO INCLUDED PRICE'S OWN "FOLKSONGS IN COUNTERPOINT," HER MUSICAL TREATMENT OF A COLLECTION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN AND AMERICAN FOLK TUNES. SHELTER MUSIC BOSTON CONTINUES TO PRESENT - AND CREATE - A DIVERSE RANGE OF CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR OUR AUDIENCES.
