ACCELERATOR: THE VENTURE FOR AMERICA ACCELERATOR GIVES VFA ALUMS THE TIME, SPACE, AND SUPPORT THEY NEED TO TURN THEIR SIDE PROJECTS AND BUSINESS CONCEPTS INTO FULL-TIME VENTURES. THE PROGRAM IS A 4-MONTH, RESIDENTIAL ACCELERATOR. VFA PROVIDES HOUSING, OFFICE SPACE, LIVING STIPENDS, AND TRAINING AND TAKES NO EQUITY IN THE COMPANIES. OUR 5TH ANNUAL ACCELERATOR TOOK PLACE IN CLEVELAND FROM AUGUST 5 TO NOVEMBER 30, 2019. VFA FOLLOWS A CURRICULUM THAT INCLUDES TRAINING, WORKSHOPS, AND MENTORING BY THE VFA TEAM AND MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. SIX COMPANIES PARTICIPATED IN THE 2019 ACCELERATOR COHORT. VFA ALSO HOSTS AN ANNUAL DEMO DAY IN WHICH COMPANIES, INCLUDING ACCELERATOR PARTICIPANTS, COMPETE FOR A POOL OF AWARDS SPONSORED BY UBS.TRAINING CAMP:THE VENTURE FOR AMERICA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM KICKS OFF WITH TRAINING CAMP, A HALLMARK OF OUR PROGRAM AND OUR PRIMARY EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVE. FOR FOUR INTENSE WEEKS IN 2019 INCOMING FELLOWS LIVED AND WORKED TOGETHER ON THE CAMPUS OF WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY IN DETROIT, LEARNING A COMBINATION OF BOTH HARD AND SOFT SKILLS CRITICAL TO A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN STARTUPS. MORE THAN A SERIES OF LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS, TRAINING CAMP IS WHAT SETS VFA APART AND WHAT MAKES OUR PROGRAM A TRUE FELLOWSHIP A COMMUNITY OF LIKE MINDED INDIVIDUALS UNITED BY A SHARED GOAL AND BONDED IN FRIENDSHIP AND CAMARADERIE. IN 2019, VFA HOSTED MORE THAN 360 PEOPLE FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY IN DETROIT TO BE PART OF THE TRAINING CAMP PROGRAM: 205 INCOMING FELLOWS, 6 TEAM MEMBERS, 12 CONTRACTORS AND INTERNS MADE DETROIT THEIR HOME FOR THE SUMMER PROGRAM. VFA PROVIDES INCOMING FELLOWS, CONTRACTORS AND INTERNS WITH ROOM AND BOARD ON CAMPUS. NEARLY 60 SPEAKERS, TRAINERS, AND GUESTS FROM OUT OF TOWN AND 25 VFA TEAM MEMBERS WERE ABLE TO EXPERIENCE DETROIT FOR THE PROGRAM. ADDITIONALLY, WE HOSTED MORE THAN 60 LOCAL SPEAKERS, TRAINERS, AND GUESTS TO PARTICIPATE IN AND MAKE AN IMPACT ON THE TRAINING CAMP EXPERIENCE. RECRUITMENT AND DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION:IN 2019 WE BEGAN OPERATION 3 TO 300, OUR COMMITMENT TO HELP 300 WOMEN AND RACIAL AND ETHNIC MINORITIES BECOME ENTREPRENEURS IN THE NEXT THREE YEARS. VFA PARTNERED WITH CHAMPION SUPPORTERS WITH DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF THE STARTUP AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP LANDSCAPE AND A COMMITMENT TO BUILDING AND MAINTAINING DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION IN THESE AREAS. ONE RESULT IS THAT THE VFA CLASS OF 2019 WAS THE LARGEST AND MOST DIVERSE CLASS TO-DATE. OF THE 205 FELLOWS WHO COMMENCED THE FELLOWSHIP IN JULY, 2019, 44% IDENTIFY AS WOMEN OR GENDER NON-CONFORMING INDIVIDUALS, AND 46% IDENTIFY AS RACIAL OR ETHNIC MINORITIES. WE ACHIEVED THIS DIVERSITY BY EXECUTING STRATEGIC RECRUITMENT EFFORTS TO DIVERSIFY OUR APPLICANT POOL. TO BUILD THE CLASS OF 2019 WE RECRUITED AT SEVEN HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES AND TWO HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTIONS. WE ALSO PARTNERED WITH 10 ORGANIZATIONS THAT HELP US REACH WOMEN AND RACIAL & ETHNIC MINORITIES TO RECRUIT THEM TO THE FELLOWSHIP, INCLUDING PARTNERS WHO WORK SPECIFICALLY BLACK STUDENTS AND LATINX STUDENTS. THESE PARTNERS INCLUDED, REWRITING THE CODE, PREP FOR PREP, LEADERSHIP ENTERPRISE FOR A DIVERSE AMERICA, JOPWELL, CODE 2040, UBS NEXTGEN LEADERS, KIPP NEW JERSEY, THURGOOD MARSHALL COLLEGE FUND, HBCU 20X20 AND BEVISIBLE. WE ALSO WORKED WITH DIVERSITY & INCLUSION STUDENT GROUPS AT SELECT COLLEGES AND LEVERAGED LINKEDIN RECRUITER TO DIRECTLY REACH OUT TO WOMEN AND RACIAL AND ETHNIC MINORITIES WHO DISPLAYED INTEREST AND EXPERIENCE IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND TECH ON THEIR LINKEDIN PROFILES.
