About this organization
Mission
Intelligence Squared U.S. was founded in 2006 to restore civility, reasoned analysis, and constructive public discourse to today's often biased media landscape. Our mission is to raise the level of public discourse in the United States by encouraging recognition that opposing viewpoints have intellectually respectable views. Our debates are made available to the public – free of charge – on a number of platforms including public radio, television, and podcast. In addition, IQ2US debates are used in classrooms around the country and made available to a number of academic databases.

INTELLIGENCE SQUARED U.S. FOUNDATION'S SINGULAR PROGRAM SERVICE IS THE PRODUCTION OF DEBATES. THE APPROACH OF THE DEBATES IS TO TAKE THE TRADITIONAL "GRAMMAR" OF OXFORD-STYLE DEBATE SERIOUSLY, WITH ONE SIDE PROPOSING AND THE OTHER SIDE OPPOSING A SHARPLY-FRAMED MOTION. LEADING THINKERS AND AUTHORITIES ON THE ISSUES ARGUE ON EACH SIDE OF THE MOTION. AFTER THE FORMAL ARGUMENTS, THE DEBATE IS THROWN OPEN TO THE FLOOR FOR QUESTIONS, TRIGGERING A LIVELY INTERCHANGE AMONG THE SPEAKERS AND AUDIENCE MEMBERS. A MODERATOR KEEPS THE PROCEEDINGS ORDERLY. EACH SIDE ATTEMPTS TO PERSUADE THE AUDIENCE TO VOTE THEIR WAY. THIS ADVERSARIAL CONTEXT IS ELECTRIC, ADDING DRAMA AND EXCITEMENT. [SEE CONTINUATION ON SCHEDULE O]THE LIVE AUDIENCE WILL VOTE ON THE MOTION BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER HEARING THE ARGUMENTS, SO THERE IS A CLEAR MEASURE OF HOW FAR PEOPLE HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN SWAYED.FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2018, INTELLIGENCE SQUARED U.S. REACHED MORE LISTENERS AND VIEWERS THAN EVER BEFORE IN TRADITIONAL AND DIGITAL MEDIA. WITH THE LAUNCH OF A NEW TELEVISION SHOW CALLED "UP FOR DEBATE" CARRIED ON THE SCRIPPS' NEWSY NETWORK, THE SERIES BECAME THE ONLY DEDICATED DEBATE PROGRAM ON CABLE TELEVISION IN THE UNITED STATES. THE DEBATES WERE MADE AVAILABLE FOR BROADCAST ON MORE THAN 230 NPR STATIONS AND THE PODCAST WAS DOWNLOADED MORE THAN FOUR MILLION TIMES, REACHING NEW NATIONAL AUDIENCES AND MAKING THE MISSION AVAILABLE TO MILLIONS OF LISTENERS. INTELLIGENCE SQUARED ALSO LAUNCHED PARTNERSHIP DEBATES WITH ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS AND THOUGHT LEADERSHIP SUMMITS, INCLUDING THE MAYO CLINIC, NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY, THE GERMAN MARSHALL FUND, THE ASPEN IDEAS FESTIVAL, AND THE ADAM SMITH SOCIETY, AMONG OTHERS. INTELLIGENCE SQUARED U.S. COLLABORATED WITH LOCAL MEDIA OUTLETS TO PRESENT THE FIRST LIVE OXFORD-STYLE DEBATE SEGMENTS IN THE NEW YORK CITY GENERAL AND PRIMARY ELECTION MAYORAL DEBATES, AND WORKED WITH THE BRIAN LEHRER SHOW TO PRODUCE A ONE-HOUR SPECIAL DEBATE ON THE BALLOT MEASURE TO HOLD A STATE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION. THE SPRING 2018 DEBATE SERIES SET A RECORD FOR THE MOST DEBATES PRESENTED IN A SINGLE SEASON IN THE ORGANIZATION'S HISTORY, WITH 11 DEBATES PRESENTED IN NEW YORK, WASHINGTON, D.C., ILLINOIS, COLORADO, CANADA, AND BRUSSELS.
