Para-cervical clamps: a new approach SCIWHF developed reusable, portable, very low-cost para-cervical clamps that allow birth attendants and other practitioners to instantaneously stop and significantly decrease the blood flow to the uterus. This innovative, simple technology provides a safe and effective method for controlling blood loss and preventing PPH. Because the device is inexpensive, accessible, and easy to use, it allows birth attendants with varied levels of medical education and training backgrounds to facilitate service delivery in hard-to-reach, low resource settings of developing countries where women are vulnerable to PPH. The stainless steel para-cervical clamps are used by entering through the vagina to locate the uterine arteries and temporarily closing them against the uterine wall (after the baby is born and before the separation and expulsion of the placenta), thus occluding the source of almost 90% of uterine blood flow that can cause severe bleeding and PPH.
