The Bushwick Starr is an Obie Award-winning nonprofit theater that presents an annual season of new performance works. We are an organization defined by both our artists and our community, and since 2007, we have grown into a thriving theatrical venue, a destination for exciting and engaging performance, and a vital neighborhood arts center serving the diverse artistic needs and impulses of our Bushwick, Brooklyn community. The Bushwick Starrs 2018-19 Main Stage season included: UGLY by Raja Feather Kelly (Sept. 5-9, 2018); The Things That Were There by David Greenspan (Oct. 10 - Nov. 3, 2018); The Infinite Love Party by Diana Oh (Jan. 10-Feb. 2, 2019); Suicide Forest by Haruna Lee (Feb. 27 - Mar. 23, 2019); Cabin by Sean Donovan (May 22 - June 8, 2019). The Starr experienced critical acclaim and popular demand leading to two performance extensions, and box-office sales that exceeded projections, all the while maintaining affordable ticket prices. We also held 6 special concerts including past, present and future artists, to celebrate our 10th Anniversary Season.We offered development opportunities through our Starr Reading Series, with free public performances by Jeesun Choi (Apr. 22, 2019), Emily Gardner Xu Hall (Mar. 11, 2019), Carlos Sirah (Mar. 5, 2019), Jonathan Payne (Mar. 4, 2019), Diane Xavier (Dec. 18, 2018), Seonjae Kim (Dec. 17, 2018), Georgina Escobar (Dec. 11, 2018), and Raquel Almazan (Dec. 10. 2018). The Bushwick Starr provided space and developmental support with Micro-Residencies for artists Sarah Blush & Bailey Williams, Nathan Yungerberg, Julia Sirna-Frest, Julia May Jonas, Hillary Miller, and Jacki Bradley & Kevin Armento to rehearse and devise their works-in-progress. In addition, we provided 2-3 weeks of pre-production support through Summer Residencies for incoming 18-19 Season Artists Raja Feather Kelly, David Greenspan, Diana Oh, Haruna Lee, and Sean Donovan in advance of their Main Stage premieresWe continued our eco-playwriting after school program Big Green Theater January through April 2019 with PS 75 and PS239, and we added a Big Green Theater fall program September through December 2018 at PS 106K. We continued our extracurricular Creating Performance workshops for local teens with social justice nonprofit El Puente. We also added senior programming at Roundtable Senior Center and Riseboro Ridgewood-Bushwick Senior Center, as well as Shake on the Block with partner Oye Group at IS 77. Each of our community and educational programs culminated in a festival of free performances. We also collaborated with Oye Group to present the Summer Arts Festival in Maria Hernandez Park, a free public event/performance on August 26, 2018 as part of the Mayors Office of Media & Entertainments Off-Broadway in the Boros program.
