About this organization
Mission
DC Greens uses the power of partnerships to support food education, food access, and food policy in the nation's capital. We're working toward a city where food education is on the menu in every classroom; where doctors write prescriptions for fresh fruits and vegetables as a matter of course; where urban agriculture is a valued element of our cityscape; and where ZIP code doesn't determine life expectancy. By leveraging existing infrastructure, resources and talent, and doing the work of collaboration, we are building a healthy food system that can be a model for the nation.
About
Food Access: DC Greens administers the District's Produce Plus program providing up to $20/week in fruits and vegetables at DC farmers' markets to more than 20,000 residents, and runs the Produce Prescription Program which provides more than 200 at-risk DC residents with doctor's prescriptions for free farmers' market produce. DC Greens hires Produce Plus customers to carry out "inreach" within their communities, spreading the word about farmers' market nutrition incentive programs, the DC Department of Health's Produce Plus, and community food resources city-wide. DC Greens also facilitates School Garden Markets with more than a dozen DC schools: weekly farm stands, hosted by a school's youth, stocked with produce from their own school garden and augmented with produce from local farmers.
