To protect and preserve Gullah Geechee history and culture by recognizing the important contributions to American culture and history by Africans and African Americans brought to coastal Gullah and Geechee communities extending from St. Augustine, FL to Wilmington, NC; assist state and local governments and public and private entities in South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida in interpreting the story of the Gullah Geechee and preserving Gullah Geechee folklore, arts, crafts, and music; assist in identifying and preserving sites, historical data, artifacts, and objects associated with Gullah Geechee for the benefit and education of the public.

Per public law 109-338, the commission conducted quarterly public meetings in each state of the corridor to: a) inform the public on the work of the commission in implementing and fulfilling the management plan b) elicit community input on issues and commission programs c) facilitate discussions between leadership of community organizations and individuals for community engagement, build sustainable communities and enhance collaborative efforts. Through strategic partnerships, collaborations and participation in partner sponsored programs and events the commission leverages resources to develop awareness and programs to preserve and protect the history and culture.
