Mission

826DC (formerly Capitol Letters Writing Center) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to working with students aged six through 18 in developing their creative and expository writing skills and to working with teachers to inspire their students to write. With this in mind, we provide after-school tutoring, in-school programming, workshops, field trips, and student publishing opportunities, all free of charge. All of our programs are structured around our understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

IN FY19, 826DC SERVED 2,905 STUDENTS THROUGH ITS SIX CORE PROGRAMS (AFTER-SCHOOL WRITING LAB, FIELD TRIPS, WORKSHOPS, THE YOUNG AUTHORS' BOOK PROJECT, READING ALL-STARS, AND IN-SCHOOL WRITING, EDITING, AND PUBLISHING PROGRAMS), EACH DESIGNED TO CULTIVATE WRITING SKILLS AND PROVIDE PUBLICATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR DC STUDENTS. 826DC PARTNERED WITH BRIDGES PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL OF WASHINGTON, DC, THROUGH ITS YOUNG AUTHORS' BOOK PROJECT TO PRODUCE ITS TWELFTH PROFESSIONAL ANTHOLOGY, THIS TIME THEY HEAR YOU, A COLLECTION OF POETRY NOW AVAILABLE IN BOOKSTORES ACROSS THE DISTRICT. COMBINED, 826DC'S IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCIES AND ON-SITE PROGRAMS PRODUCED MORE THAN 100 CHAPBOOKS THROUGH OUR ON-SITE BOOKBINDING STUDIO, EACH WRITTEN BY DC STUDENTS IN COLLABORATION WITH OUR PARTNER TEACHERS. 826DC'S DIRECT SERVICE PROGRAMS PROVIDED MORE THAN 1,000 HOURS OF WRITING EDUCATION TO STUDENTS IN ALL EIGHT WARDS OF DC IN FY19.
