Mission

Pie Ranch's mission is to cultivate a healthy and just food system from seed to table through food education, farmer pathways, and regional partnerships. Pie Ranch is an organic farm & nonprofit education center on the California coast, 55 miles south of San Francisco. We envision a world where all people have access to healthy food; farmers build sustainable farms linked to local communities; and agricultural lands are preserved and enhanced for generations to come. We are committed to racial justice and food justice, and seek to engage and empower our communities to dismantle racism within the food system and outside of it.

About

PIE RANCH, INC. ("PIE RANCH") IS A UNIQUE FOOD SYSTEM EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION AND A THRIVING, SUSTAINABLE FARM ON THE SOUTHERN END OF THE SAN MATEO COUNTY COAST. PIE RANCH CULTIVATES A HEALTHY AND JUST FOOD SYSTEM FROM SEED TO TABLE THROUGH FOOD EDUCATION, FARMER TRAINING, AND REGIONAL PARTNERSHIPS. WE LIKE TO THINK OF OUR YOUTH PROGRAMMING AS BUILDING THE "DEMAND," THE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM AS BUILDING THE "SUPPLY,- AND THE REGIONAL ADVOCACY AS FOSTERING THE CONDITIONS THAT WILL MAKE IT EASIER FOR THE SUPPLY AND DEMAND TO COME TOGETHER IN A ROBUST SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEM. PIE RANCH'S YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAM, IS UNIQUE IN THAT WE WORK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS, REACHING STUDENTS WHERE THEY ALREADY SPEND THEIR DAYS - IN THE CLASSROOM. CLASSROOM LESSONS INTEGRATE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION, FOOD SYSTEM, AND FOOD JUSTICE LESSONS INTO THEIR REGULAR CURRICULUM IN SUBJECTS SUCH AS ENGLISH, SCIENCE, HEALTH, GOVERNMENT, AND ECONOMICS. THE STUDENTS ARE TYPICALLY INVOLVED FOR A YEAR AT A TIME, AND MANY ARE ENGAGED WITH US OVER TWO OR MORE YEARS. IN ADDITION TO CLASSROOM WORK, YOUTH VISIT OUR FARM AND WORK IN THEIR SCHOOL GARDENS, HAVING HANDS-ON OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES THAT ARE TIED TO WHAT THEY LEARN IN THEIR CLASSROOMS. FARM VISITS MAKE PIE RANCH'S PROGRAM UNIQUE, BECAUSE STUDENTS CONNECT WITH NATURE BY PARTICIPATING IN A FULL-SCALE LIVING ECO- SYSTEM. THEY ALSO WORK WITH OUR SKILLED CHEF EDUCATORS IN OUR OUTDOOR KITCHEN TO MAKE NUTRITIOUS MEALS AND BAKE PIE TOGETHER, STARTING WITH INGREDIENTS THEY HARVEST ON OUR FARM. THEY ARE ABLE TO EXPERIENCE THE FULL CYCLE OF FOOD, FROM SEED, TO HARVEST, TO TABLE. THE GOALS OF OUR FARMER APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM ARE MET THROUGH AN INTENSIVE PROGRAM OF BOTH THEORETICAL AND HANDS-ON LEARNING. THEIR TRAINING PROGRAM FOLLOWS THE ANNUAL SEASONAL CYCLES OF FARM PLANNING, PREPARATION, PLANTING, AND HARVEST. OUR APPRENTICES GAIN HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE OPERATING ALL ASPECTS OF OUR SUSTAINABLE FARM'S SEASONALLY-CHANGING WORKLOAD THROUGH ONE FULL YEAR. AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF THEIR LEARNING IS ABOUT HOW TO OPERATE A FINANCIALLY-VIABLE FARM ENTERPRISE, AND GENERATE EARNED INCOME FROM A VARIETY OF SOURCES INCLUDING COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE ("CSA"), WHOLESALE AND RETAIL SALES, VALUE-ADDED PRODUCTS, FEES FOR SERVICE, SMALL FARM MARKETING, AND BRAND CREATION. OUR REGIONAL ADVOCACY PROGRAM ADVOCATES AND ACTS IN COLLABORATION WITH REGIONAL PARTNERS TO CREATE A HEALTHIER FOOD SYSTEM, AND ENACT LOCAL POLICIES AND PRACTICES THAT WILL ENCOURAGE, SUPPORT, AND PROTECT SUSTAINABLE FARMING AND LOCAL FOOD CONSUMPTION IN OUR REGION. CURRENTLY, THIS PROGRAM IS FOCUSED UPON CREATING A SAN MATEO COUNTY POLICY THAT WILL ATTRACT ENTREPRENEURIAL FARMERS TO OUR AREA, IN COLLABORATION WITH OUR MANY REGIONAL ALLIES WITHIN AND AMONG THE SAN MATEO FOOD SYSTEMS ALLIANCE (OF WHICH PIE RANCH IS A FOUNDING MEMBER). THE DIRECT CONNECTION WITH THE FARM HAS HELPED EMPLOYEES AND STUDENTS OF ORGANIZATIONS LIKE GOOGLE, STANFORD DINING, AND AIRBNB TO UNDERSTAND WHERE SOME OF THEIR FOOD IS COMING FROM AS WELL AS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE CERTIFIED ORGANIC, FOOD JUSTICE CERTIFIED, AND ANIMAL WELFARE APPROVED. PHOTOS AND STORIES OF THE FARM ARE SHARED WITH EATERS IN VARIOUS FORMATS. IN ADDITION, DUE TO THE PARTNERSHIP AND PROXIMITY OF THE RANCH, EMPLOYEES, FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS ARE ABLE TO VISIT AND ENGAGE IN HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES AT THE FARM. WE ARE ALSO DEVELOPING A TAKE HOME MEAL-KIT PROGRAM WITH INGREDIENTS FROM THE PARTICIPATING REGIONAL FARMS, WIDENING THE MARKET POTENTIAL FOR ORGANIC PRODUCERS. THE INITIATIVE IS ON THE PATH TO DEVELOPING A VIABLE MODEL FOR THE NEW FARMERS PIE RANCH IS TRAINING, AS WELL AS A WAY FOR LARGE ORGANIZATION FOOD SERVICE TO PLAY A MEANINGFUL ROLE IN SUSTAINING ECOLOGICALLY SOUND AND SOCIALLY JUST, AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION IN THEIR OWN BACKYARDS.??OUR HOPE IS THAT BY LEVERAGING THE POWER AND PRIVILEGE HELD BY INSTITUTIONS LIKE GOOGLE AND STANFORD, WE WILL BE ABLE TO SET UP A REPLICABLE MODEL FOR OTHER FARMERS AND INSTITUTIONS, INCLUDING THE PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS WE SERVE THROUGH OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. IN 2018, PIE RANCH CONTINUED TO PROVIDE YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN THE SAME WAY IT HAD FOR MANY YEARS PREVIOUSLY, AND BOTH OUR FARMER APPRENTICESHIPS AND REGULAR REGIONAL ADVOCACY ACTIVITIES REMAINED UNCHANGED AS WELL. HOWEVER DUE TO FINANCIAL CONCERNS, THE PRODUCTION FARM AT AO NUEVO WAS CLOSED IN 2018. AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION HAD CEASED THERE AS OF THE END OF THE GROWING SEASON (WINTER 2017-18), AND THE FARM STAFF THERE LAID OFF AT THE END OF FEBRUARY 2018. THE REMAINING OAT HAY AND OTHER STORED CROPS WERE SOLD OVER THE COURSE OF 2018, UNTIL THE FINAL DECISION WAS MADE MID- YEAR TO CEASE OPERATIONS THERE ENTIRELY AND VACATE THE PROPERTY BY THE END OF 2018, WHEN THE CURRENT LEASE EXPIRED. HOWEVER, SIMULTANEOUSLY, A NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR PROGRAMMATIC EXPANSION AROSE IN 2018, WHEN PIE RANCH WAS OFFERED A 1/YEAR LEASE FOR 10 YEARS ON 418 ACRES AT HISTORIC CASCADE RANCH, A SHORT DISTANCE UP HWY 1 FROM PIE RANCH'S MAIN FACILITY. THE CASCADE PROPERTY WILL BE THE HOME OF A NEW FARMER INCUBATOR PROGRAM, WHICH WILL BEGIN IN EARNEST IN 2019.
