UNDER STRICT MILITARY SECRECY, HANFORD PRODUCED PLUTONIUM FOR ATOMIC WEAPONS FOR OVER 45 YEARS, SHOWERING NORTHWEST COMMUNITIES WITH RADIATION AND CREATING A NUCLEAR NIGHTMARE THAT WILL TAKE OVER 75 YEARS TO CLEAN UP.

CONSTANT ATTENTION, MAINTENANCE, ENGAGEMENT, AND, AT TIMES, OVERHAUL, ARE NECESSARY TO ENSURE THAT IT GETS BETTER, NOT WORSE, OVER TIME. THIRTY-FIVE PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN THIS FORUM FROM A BROAD CROSS-SECTION OF PEOPLE INVOLVED IN CLEANUP INCLUDING TRIBES, AGENCIES, OR STATE, CONTRACTORS, PUBLIC-INTEREST GROUPS, ACADEMIA, AND MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC.IN 2018, HANFORD CHALLENGE CONDUCTED OVER 20 INTERVIEWS WITH LOCAL AND NATIONAL MEDIA RESULTING IN DOZENS OF LOCAL AND NATIONAL STORIES COVERING HANFORD ISSUES, ENSURING THAT THE PUBLIC IS WELL-INFORMED. HANFORD CHALLENGE ALSO ENSURED THAT INFORMATION ABOUT HANFORD WAS SHARED AND TURNED INTO A TOOL FOR PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA INCLUDING FACEBOOK, TWITTER, AND INSTAGRAM. HANFORD CHALLENGE WORKED CLOSELY WITH MASTERS IN PUBLIC HEALTH STUDENTS ON A RESEARCH PROJECT FOCUSED ON PLUTONIUM FINISHING PLANT EXPOSURES AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES, INCLUDING A LITERATURE REVIEW. STUDENTS FINDINGS WERE PRESENTED AT THE END OF THE PROJECT IN BOTH THE UNIVERSITY SETTING AS WELL AS IN PUBLIC FORUMS.HANFORD CHALLENGE ORGANIZED THREE PUBLIC EVENTS IN 2018 FOCUSED ON EFFORTS BY DOE TO ABANDON HIGH-LEVEL WASTE AT HANFORD; AND ADVOCATED FOR AND PARTICIPATED IN SIX EVENTS PUT ON BY THE HANFORD TRI-PARTY AGREEMENT AGENCIES INCLUDING A NEW MEETING FORMAT PILOTED IN HOOD RIVER, OR THAT WAS PROPOSED BY THE HANFORD ADVISORY BOARD.
