The museum collects, conserves and exhibits these arts of daily life - by unknown craftsmen of ancient times, from traditional cultures of past and present, and by historical and contemporary designers. Starting in 2018, Mingei International Museum embarked on a major transformation of its facility and aims to redefine its relationship to Balboa Park, San Diego, the region, and the world. The museum is closed for renovation through the fall of 2020. During the museum's closure a temporary home was established in Arts District Liberty Station and other pop-up locations across the region.
