THE ATTIC YOUTH CENTER CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, TRANSGENDER AND QUEER/QUESTIONING (LGBTQ) YOUTH TO DEVELOP INTO HEALTHY, INDEPENDENT, CIVIC-MINDED ADULTS WITHIN A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY, AND PROMOTES THE ACCEPTANCE OF LGBTQ IN SOCIETY.

INTRODUCTION THE ATTIC YOUTH CENTER IS PHILADELPHIAS ONLY AGENCY EXCLUSIVELY SERVING LGBTQ YOUTH. CURRENTLY, THE ATTIC OFFERS THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS AND SERVICES: 1) LIFE SKILLS CENTER - PROVIDES INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP OPPORTUNITIES FOR LGBTQ YOUTH TO LEARN, PRACTICE, AND MASTER THE SKILLS THEY WILL NEED TO SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITION INTO ADULTHOOD. YOUTH PARTICIPATE IN SUPPORT GROUPS, WORKSHOPS, PAID INTERNSHIPS, INDIVIDUAL LIFE COACHING, MENTORING, CASE MANAGEMENT, HOUSING NAVIGATION, AND HIV COUNSELING. PROGRAMMING IS OFFERED IN FIVE CONCENTRATION AREAS: - WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT - ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT - HEALTH AND WELLNESS - HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION AND REMEDIATION - LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT 2) MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMMING - INCLUDES INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY THERAPY AS WELL AS PEER SUPPORT GROUPS. COUNSELING IS PROVIDED BY SPECIALISTS IN ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT. 3) THE BRYSON INSTITUTE OF THE ATTIC YOUTH CENTER - PROVIDES TRAINING, OUTREACH, AND CONSULTATION TO SCHOOLS, SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES, AND FAITH COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE TRI-STATE AREA ON THE BEST PRACTICES FOR CREATING SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE SPACES FOR LGBTQ YOUTH. ATTIC YOUTH PANELISTS ALSO LEAD TRAININGS, SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES, AND OPEN THEMSELVES UP TO QUESTIONS AND CONVERSATION. 4) ADDITIONAL SUPPORTIVE SERVICES - INCLUDES DAILY MEALS AND ACCESS TO FOOD, ACCESS TO COMPUTERS AND OTHER TECHNOLOGY, DAILY DROP-IN, AND ACCESS TO OTHER BASIC NEEDS SUCH AS PERSONAL HYGIENE SUPPLIES. THE ATTIC IN 2019 1) IN MAY 2019, THE ATTIC WAS AWARDED THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS AWARD, FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS. WE WERE CHOSEN FOR THIS AWARD FOR ALL THAT WE DO TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR LGBTQ YOUTH AND TO PROMOTE THEIR ACCEPTANCE IN SOCIETY. 2) THE ATTIC WAS CHOSEN BY SEVERAL COMPANIES INCLUDING CHIPOTLE, PAINTING WITH A TWIST, WEAVER'S WAY COOP, MACY'S, IRON MOUNTAIN AND OTHERS TO BE RECIPIENT OF DONATIONS RAISED AT THEIR FUNDRAISERS. WE HAVE REPEATEDLY BEEN TOLD THAT THE WORK THAT WE DO TO EMPOWER AND UPLIFT LGBTQ YOUTH IS THE REASON FOR THESE DONATIONS. 3)20 YOUTH PARTICIPATED IN A HIGH SCHOOL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR 5 HOURS A WEEK. INTERNS USED PROJECT-BASED LEARNING TO CREATE A CAMPAIGN TO MAKE PHILADELPHIA A BETTER SAFER COMMUNITY FOR LGBTQ YOUTH. THE STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE GAINED VALUABLE WORK-READINESS AND SOCIAL ACTION SKILLS, AND PRESENTED THEIR WORK IN A CULMINATION EVENT. INTERNS LEARNED JOURNALISM SKILLS, PARTICIPATED IN CONFERENCES, AND CREATED RADIO PODCASTS ON TOPICS OF INTEREST FOR THEIR PEERS. 4) THE ATTIC PROVIDED HUNDREDS OF LGBTQ YOUNG PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS AND HOUSING INSTABILITY WITH SUPPORT. 5) THE ATTIC EXPANDED JOB AND INTERNSHIP PLACEMENTS FOR YOUTH IN THE COMMUNITY, AND SUPPORTED YOUTH IN MAINTAINING THEIR EMPLOYMENT. 6) THE ATTIC WAS ONCE AGAIN INVITED BY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PHILADELPHIA TO TRAIN ALL NEW TEACHERS AND GUIDANCE COUNSELORS ON HOW TO CREATE AFFIRMING SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTS FOR LGBTQ YOUTH. THE ATTIC ALSO TRAINED ALL NEW JUVENILE JUSTICE STAFF AT PHILADELPHIA'S DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES ON HOW TO BEST SERVE THE LGBTQ YOUTH IN THEIR CARE. YOUTH OUTCOMES IN 2019, YOUTH PARTICIPATED IN THE FOLLOWING ATTIC PROGRAMS AND SERVICES: 1) 689 YOUTH PARTICIPATED IN PROGRAMMING AT THE ATTIC YOUTH CENTER. 365 WERE HIGH SCHOOL AGE YOUTH PARTICIPATED. 324 WERE OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL. 2) 83% OF HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH OBTAINED SUMMER EMPLOYMENT. 3) 21% OF OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH OBTAINED YEAR-ROUND EMPLOYMENT. 4) 71% OF YOUTH DEMONSTRATED IMPROVEMENT IN ACADEMIC SKILLS. 5) 59% OF YOUTH IN HIGH SCHOOL MAINTAIN A STRONG GPA OR IMPROVED THEIR GPA. 6) 76% OF YOUTH IN HIGH SCHOOL DECREASED ABSENCES AND DID NOT DROP OUT. 7) 88% OF HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS GRADUATED. 8) 62% OF YOUTH ENROLLED IN A COLLEGE OR DEGREE PROGRAM MAINTAINED THEIR ENROLLMENT. 9) 236 YOUTH PARTICIPATED IN HIV PREVENTION PROGRAMMING AND HEALTH AND WELLNESS ACTIVITIES. 10) 245 LIFE SKILL'S PARTICIPANTS ENGAGED IN YOUTH LEADERSHIP GROUPS AND ACTIVITIES AND SUPPORTIVE SERVICES. 11) 60 YOUTH AND THEIR FAMILIES RECEIVED COUNSELING SERVICES, EQUATING NEARLY 2,000 INDIVIDUAL, COUPLE, AND FAMILY COUNSELING SESSIONS. 12) 67 GROUPS OR ORGANIZATIONS AND NEARLY 3,000 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRAININGS AND WORKSHOPS ON THE BEST PRACTICES IN MEETING THE NEEDS OF LGBTQ YOUTH. PROGRAMMING OUTCOME MEASURES THE ATTIC CONSISTENTLY EVALUATES ITS PROGRAMMING IN EFFORT TO ASSURE THAT EACH YOUTH WHO PARTICIPATES IN ATTIC SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES GROWS AND THRIVES. OVER TIME, THE ATTIC HAS FOUND THAT CONSISTENT PARTICIPATION IN ATTIC PROGRAMMING LEADS TO: 1) INCREASED POSITIVE BEHAVIOR/PERSONAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. 2) INCREASED SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL COMPETENCIES (E.G. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS, ADAPTABILITY, TEAMWORK). 3) INCREASED LEADERSHIP CAPACITY (E.G. PUBLIC SPEAKING, GROUP FACILITATION, ADVOCACY). 4) IMPROVED LITERACY, STUDY SKILLS, AND ACADEMIC COMPETENCIES. 5) IMPROVED JOB ACQUISITION SKILLS. 6) INCREASED 21ST CENTURY SKILLS (E.G. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY LITERACY, CRITICAL THINKING, CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION, ETC.). 7) IMPROVED SCHOOL ATTENDANCE. ADDITIONALLY, THROUGH TRAININGS, WORKSHOPS, AND CONSULTATIONS LED BY THE BRYSON INSTITUTE OF THE ATTIC YOUTH CENTER, SCHOOLS, SOCIAL SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND ORGANIZATIONS: 1) INCREASE AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE LGBTQ YOUTH POPULATION. 2) INCREASE KNOWLEDGE OF RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO SUPPORT THE LGBTQ YOUTH THAT THEY SERVE. 3) WORK TOWARDS CREATING MORE ACCEPTING AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENTS FOR LGBTQ YOUTH.
