Mission

ARDF promotes and develops alternative scientific solutions to the problem of animal testing.

About

ARDF's new alternatives in research (AIR) challenge' grant program made its first grants in 2018 to focus on funding for non-animal methods in biomedical research. Grants worked on new methods for U.S. research in cancer, Alzheimer's and autism. The 'annual open' grant program continued with funding for projects that advance non-animal models, including 'on-a-chip' systems to study liver disease, kidney disease and colitis, a 3D-printed model of breast cancer metastasis, and exosome studies in a nano environment to study inflammation, which is understood to be a factor in many diseases. ARDF presented the William and Eleanor Cave Award to Robert Kavlock, Ph.D., for extraordinary achievements in advancing alternative methods in toxicity testing, including director, Environmental Protection Agency's National Center for Computational Toxicology and co-chair, TOX 21 working group which established high-throughput screening methods for chemical testing. ARDF also sponsored scientific meetings and other educational efforts to advance understanding and collaboration on alternative methods.
