About this organization
Mission
The mission of the American Anti-Vivisection Society is to unequivocally oppose and work to end experimentation on animals and to oppose all other forms of cruelty to animals.
About
Activities include public outreach, investigations, and campaigns to end experiments on animals through education and advocacy. The AV magazine published a special issue on chemical testing and related changes in law and policy in relation to traditional animal tests. A 4-page bi-monthly newsletter and a monthly online newsletter provide timely, reliable information to over 25,000 members and supporters so they can take effective action for animals, such as encouraging full retirement to sanctuaries for chimpanzees, full enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act, and the need to use alternative, non-animal methods. AAVS places ads in national media to raise awareness that dogs, cats and other animals suffer in labs. In addition, grants are provided to sanctuaries for care of animals, especially chimpanzees and other primates released from laboratories. Note that the grants expense noted above is 'net total' of grants made, $321,613, plus 'grants payable liability adjustment' of $373,818 on long-term grant commitment to provide lifetime care for young chimpanzees released from a lab when babies, now living at Chimp Haven.
