IN FISCAL YEAR 2018, J.C. BLAIR MEMORIAL HOSPITAL PROVIDED THE COMMUNITY WITH CHARITY CARE SERVICES AMOUNTING TO APPROXIMATELY $465,000. PATIENTS RECEIVE MEDICALLY NECESSARY SERVICES REGARDLESS OF ABILITY TO PAY. IN ADDITION, THE REIMBURSEMENT SHORTFALL FROM THE MEDICAID PROGRAM WAS OVER $2 MILLION. CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE "O".THE HOSPITAL CONTRIBUTED ALMOST $4 MILLION IN COMMUNITY BENEFIT PROGRAMS THAT INCLUDED THOUSANDS OF HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE PROVIDING FREE EDUCATION AND SCREENING PROGRAMS, MENTORING FUTURE HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS, PROVIDING LEADERSHIP SERVICE TO COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AND CONTRIBUTING FINANCIAL AND IN-KIND SUPPORT TO A NUMBER OF LOCAL INITIATIVES. THESE PROGRAMS INCLUDED: FREE DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT CLASSES, FREE BREAST-FEEDING EDUCATION AND CONSULTING FOR NEW MOTHERS, FREE NEWBORN SAFETY KITS, FREE YEAR-ROUND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ON NUTRITION, HEART HEALTH, BREAST HEALTH, ETC., FREE OSTEOPOROSIS SCREENINGS, PARTICIPATION IN NUMEROUS HEALTH FAIRS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY, AND ANNUAL WELLNESS CHECK COMPREHENSIVE BLOOD SCREENINGS. ALSO, J.C. BLAIR PROVIDED A $1 MILLION COMMUNITY GRANT TO THE BROAD TOP AREA MEDICAL CENTER FQHC TO SUPPORT THE PRIMARY CARE NETWORK AND ITS 6 PRACTICES. THE HOSPITAL ALSO SUPPORTED THE EXPANSION AND RENOVATION OF THE ENDOSCOPY SUITE.
