NAMI NJ WORKS TO SPREAD AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS TO REMOVE THE STIGMA OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH THESE ILLNESSES. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED IN MULTIPLE PROGRAMS. NAMI NEW JERSEY PROVIDES A FREE 12-WEEK COURSE FOR FAMILY CAREGIVERS OF INDIVIDUALS WITH SEVERE MENTAL ILLNESS. "FAMILY TO FAMILY" IS TAUGHT BY FELLOW FAMILY CAREGIVERS, TRAINED BY NAMI NJ. THE COURSE DISCUSSES THE DISEASES AND TREATMENTS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA, BIPOLAR DISORDER, MAJOR DEPRESSION, PANIC DISORDER AND OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER WHILE TEACHES FAMILY MEMBERS COPING SKILLS FOR THEIR CHALLENGING ROLE. THERE WERE MORE THAN 45 FAMILY TO FAMILY CLASSES HELD THROUGHOUT NEW JERSEY THIS YEAR.THROUGH EDUCATION ACTIVITIES, NEWSLETTERS AND CONFERENCES WE PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT THE LATEST RESEARCH AND AVAILABLE TREATMENTS FOR MENTAL ILLNESS. NAMI NJ HOSTED ITS ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN DECEMBER 2017, WHICH HOSTED MORE THAN 240 INDIVIDUALS. ADDITIONALLY, THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER REACHES MORE THAN 8,900 INDIVIDUALS EACH MONTH.WE ALSO OFFER EDUCATION FOR MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS AND SCHOOL EDUCATORS ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS. THE EDUCATING THE EDUCATOR PROGRAM REACHED MORE THAN 600 EDUCATORS.PROVIDING SUPPORT FOR PEOPLE WITH LIVED MENTAL ILLNESS EXPERIENCE, AS WELL AS PROVIDING EDUCATION AND AWARENESS ARE THE IOOV AND HEARTS & MINDS PROGRAMS. LAST YEAR IOOV PROVIDED MORE THAN 170 PRESENTATIONS REACHING NEARLY 1,500 PEOPLE. AN ADDITIONAL 550 PEOPLE RECEIVED PHYSICAL HEALTH INFORMATION THROUGH THE HEARTS & MINDS PROGRAM.
