Mission

David’s House is the dream of a little boy named David Cyr who passed away at age five after a three-and-a-half-year struggle against acute lymphatic leukemia. Built so that families can remain together when it is most crucial, David’s House provides a home-away-from-home and support for families with children receiving treatment through the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

About

DAVID'S HOUSE IS NAMED AFTER A YOUNG BOY, DAVID CYR, WHO PASSED AWAY FROM LEUKEMIA AT THE AGE OF FIVE. DURING DAVID'S TIME IN THE HOSPITAL, HIS ADOPTIVE PARENTS MET FAMILIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD WHO WERE NOT ABLE TO SPEND PRECIOUS TIME WITH THEIR CHILDREN BECAUSE OF A VARIETY OF BARRIERS. DAVID'S HOUSE WAS ESTABLISHED AS A WAY FOR FUTURE FAMILIES TO BE NEAR THEIR CHILDREN DURING CRITICAL, AND SOMETIMES FINAL, MOMENTS. INSTEAD OF SLEEPING IN CARS OR STAYING IN EXPENSIVE HOTELS, WORRYING ABOUT HOW TO PAY FOR FOOD, AND FEELING ALONE IN CHALLENGING AND OFTEN TRAUMATIC TIMES, FAMILIES CAN STAY HERE AT NO COST AS LONG AS NECESSARY, MINUTES FROM THE HOSPITAL. BECAUSE OF THE SPECIALIZED CARE OFFERED, SMALLER HOSPITALS THROUGHOUT THE NORTHEAST AND BEYOND REFER PATIENTS TO CHAD, AND THUS THE NEED FOR DAVID'S HOUSE IS SIGNIFICANT. MOST OF THE FAMILIES WE SERVE HAVE INFANTS REQUIRING LONG-TERM HOSPITALIZATION AND SUBSEQUENT FOLLOW-UP CARE, BUT WE ALSO SERVE THOSE WITH CHILDREN ADMITTED IN OTHER PEDIATRIC DEPARTMENTS OR RECEIVING OUTPATIENT CARE. FROM JANUARY 1986 THROUGH JUNE 2019, DAVID'S HOUSE HAS PROVIDED OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATIONS FOR OVER 15,300 UNIQUE FAMILIES FROM 42 STATES, 2 US TERRITORIES, AND 27 FOREIGN COUNTRIES.
