Mission
The Global Justice Center (GJC) works for peace, justice, and security by enforcing international laws that protect human rights and promote gender equality. We promote "power, not pity" as we advocate a model for justice that embraces the following tenets: Gender parity in power and under the law is essential to global security, justice, and prosperity for all. Discriminatory political and legal systems that fail to enforce human rights or ensure equal protection to women must be challenged. Progressive interpretation and enforcement of international law is a powerful catalyst for social and structural change and is necessary to establish a global "rule of law."

(2) ENGAGED WITH BOTH THE INDEPENDENT FACT-FINDING MISSION ON MYANMAR (MYANMAR IIM) AND, SUBSEQUENTLY, THE OFFICE OF THE PROSECUTOR (OTP) AT THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT (ICC) REGARDING THE DECISION TO OPEN A PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION INTO THE DEPORTATION OF THE ROHINGYA FROM MYANMAR TO BANGLADESH.(3) PROVIDED EXPERT GUIDANCE ON THE STRUCTURAL BARRIERS, ESPECIALLY THE CONSTITUTION, THAT IMPEDE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR PERPETRATORS AND PRECLUDE JUSTICE FOR VICTIMS OF HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES IN BURMA TO SUPPORT THE DRAFTING OF THE 2018 SECRETARY-GENERAL'S REPORT ON CONFLICT-RELATED SEXUAL VIOLENCE, WHICH NAMED THE BURMESE MILITARY AS PERPETRATORS OF SYSTEMIC SEXUAL VIOLENCE FOR THE FIRST TIME.(4) PUBLISHED A GROUNDBREAKING REPORT DETAILING THE ROLE THAT GENDER PLAYS IN BOTH THE COMMISSION OF GENOCIDE AND THE ACCOUNTABILITY PROCESS AND URGING THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO INCORPORATE THIS GENDERED ANALYSIS INTO PREVENTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY EFFORTS. (5) CONVENED A PANEL OF EXPERTS, INCLUDING PARI IBRAHIM OF THE FREE YEZIDI FOUNDATION, PHUMZILE MLAMBO-NGCUKA OF UN WOMEN, AND PRAMILA PATTEN, UN SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN CONFLICT, TO COMMEMORATE THE FOURTH ANNIVERSARY OF DAESH'S ATTACK ON THE YAZIDI COMMUNITY IN SINJAR AND DISCUSS THE ROLE OF GENDER IN EFFORTS TO ENSURE JUSTICE AND ACCOUNTABILITY FOR SURVIVORS.(6) JOINED THE GLOBAL ACTION AGAINST MASS ATROCITY CRIMES (GAAMAC), AND, AT THE COALITION'S ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN UGANDA, FACILITATED THE ONLY WORKSHOP TO FOCUS ON GENDER, HELPED MAINSTREAM GENDER IN THE CONFERENCE OUTCOME DOCUMENT, AND ESTABLISHED A GENDER WORKING GROUP OF EXPERTS.
