Mission
TO MAINTAIN A MULTIFACETED THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTER PROVIDING EQUINE FACILITATED THERAPY FOR THE HANDICAPPED.
About
THE STONEYBROOK FOUNDATION D/B/A AS NICKERS 'N NEIGHS THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTER IS A NON-PROFIT ENTITY THAT USES EQUINE ACTIVITIES TO PROMOTE THE COGNITIVE, PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, AND SOCIAL WELL BEING OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. THESE DISABILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, AUTISM, CEREBAL PALSY, DOWN SYNDRONE, MUSCLAR DYSTROPHY, NON-VERBAL DISORDERS, VISUAL AND HEARING IMPAIRMENT, AND DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING DISABILITIES. OUR STABLE INCLUDES A VARIETY OF HORSES RANGING FROM A TINY MINIATURE HORSE ON UP TO A LARGE QUARTER HORSE. OUR DIVERSE HERD ENABLES US TO ACCOMMODATE THE NEEDS OF A WIDE RANGE OF STUDENTS, BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS. OUR STUDENTS LEARN TO GROOM, TACK UP AND HANDLE HORSES FROM THE GROUND AS WELL AS LEARNING TO RIDE. THROUGH THESE ACTIVITIES OUR STUDENTS ARE EXERCISING THEIR MINDS AS WELL AS THEIR BODIES. IN 2016 WE HAD OVER 100 STUDENTS, MOST OF WHOM WERE CHILDREN WITH A DIAGNOSIS OF AUTISM. DEPENDING ON THE DIAGNOSIS AND THE SPECIFIC CHALLENGES A STUDENT MIGHT FACE, OUR PROGRAM CAN HELP THEM IN MULTIPLE WAYS. THE CHILDREN WITH AUTISM GROW TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF LISTENING WELL, COMMUNICATING CLEARLY, FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS, ETC. AT THE SAME TIME, THEY DEVELOP STRENGTH IN THEIR CORE, GAIN BETTER HAND-TO-EYE COORDINATION AND IMPROVE THEIR BALANCE. FOR OTHERS, WITH A DIFFERENT DIAGNOSIS, THE PROGRAM MAY HELP TO INCREASE THE STUDENT'S FLEXIBILITY, HELP THEM TO LEARN TO TRUST, OR GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN A RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE TO THEM.
