About this organization
Mission
Reel Works' mission is to provide free filmmaking programs for New York City youth. Using a one-on-one mentoring model, we challenge teens to tell their stories and have their voices heard. In turn, they build skills in literacy, leadership, and self-confidence to create productive futures. We serve 600 youths annually from middle school through high school, helping them graduate, get into college, and launch media careers.
About
Reel Works programs are designed to engage youth through intensive in-school and after-school filmmaking workshops and to provide a safe community and a continuum of learning opportunities for students from middle school through high school and beyond. Most youth enter Reel Works through our lab documentary workshop which matches teens 1:1 with professional filmmaker-mentors to create original short films about their lives and communities. The narrative lab teaches advanced skills in screenwriting, producing, directing, cinematography and editing. The summer lab is another portal of entry that uses experimental filmmaking to teach basic skills.
