About
The largest undertaking of the year was the 11th Imagine Science Film Festival, which took place October 12 19, 2018 and consisted of 14 events including short and feature film screenings, VR and tech demos, performances, educational workshops, conversations with directors, talks, and a comprehensive series of panel discussions with filmmakers, artists, scientists, and journalists accompanying 7 of our short film programs. This year's film program included 84 short films and 3 features in total. Collaborating venues included 6 prestigious institutions across New York including the American Museum of Natural History, the Rubin Museum, the New School, Caveat, Bowery Poetry Club, and the New York Hall of Science. Programming for the latter was specially targeted to younger audiences and families, part of our ongoing commitment to educational programming, while our feature film presentations with the Rubin Museum and the American Museum of Natural History interlocked with current exhibition and the Margaret Mead Film Festival. New School faculty engaged as moderators for many panel discussions, while students were encouraged to interview festival guests and filmmaker as part of a Sci-Art class tailored to the festival. This festival also saw the second year of our expanded Symbiosis Competition. Supported by the Simons Foundation, this initiative brought together top filmmakers from around the world to collaborate directly with scientists for a week during the festival, producing 6 new short works spanning many subjects genres. This years winning film, Leah Shore and Tracey Fanaras Extremophiles, has since gone on to show in 4 other festivals, including the Lighthouse International Film Festival, where it won the Social Impact Short Award Winner. Though Extremophiles was her first film to deal with scientific themes, director Leah Shore, inspired by her experience, hopes to expand the film into a series of short films dealing with environmental issues. In the meantime, past Symbiosis and ISF-produced films, Peter Burrs Nematodes and Miryam Charles A Fortress, showed in 2018 in The Rotterdam International Film Festival and the Edinburgh International Film Festival.Other projects around the world filled out the year. In March, we presented the 4th year of Imagine Science Abu Dhabi, a 3-day festival in the United Arab Emirates including films, panels, a sci-art show, a filmmaking workshop for local Middle School students, class visits by artists and filmmakers, and integration into class curriculums. We also presented guest programs at the Science Talk Conference in Portland, Oregon, the International Wildlife Film Festival in Missoula, Montana, and The Lismore Quad, in Lismore Australia with the University of New South Wales.Throughout, monthly Imagine Science -curated film programs continued to go out through Labocine.com, a web platform for science filmmaking and art, vastly extending our audience all over the world.

- Film festival:our primary operation of 2019 was the 12th imagine science film festival, october 18 - 25, 2019. the festival encompassed 11 events including short and feature film screenings, panel discussions, performance, live presentations. the film program consisted of 54 short and 56 feature films.collaborating venues included 6 prestigious institutions across new york including the american museum of natural history, the new school, caveat, bowery poetry club, uniondocs, and the new york hall of science. programming for the latter was specially targeted to younger audiences and families, part of our ongoing commitment to educational programming, while our feature film presentations with uniondocs and the american museum of natural history interlocked with current programming and the margaret mead film festival. new school faculty joined as moderators for our panel discussions, while students were encouraged to interview festival guests and filmmaker as part of a sci-art class tailored to the festival.this festival also saw the third year of our expanded symbiosis competition. supported by the simons foundation, this initiative brought together top filmmakers from around the world to collaborate directly with scientists for a week during the festival, producing six new short works spanning many subjects and genres. these films are currently being submitted to film festivals around the world. - Satellite film festival:other satellite projects filled out the year. in february, we presented the 5th year of imagine science abu dhabi, a 3-day festival in the united arab emirates including films, panels, a sci-art show, a filmmaking workshop for local middle school students, class visits by artists and filmmakers, and direct integration into class curriculums. we also presented guest programs at the science talk conference in portland, oregon, the hello tomorrow conference in paris, black box in newcastle, england, wofford college in south carolina, university of colorado boulder, and the state space in berlin. Expenses $47,762.
- Imagine science online:throughout, monthly imagine science-curated film programs continued to go out through labocine.com, a web platform for science filmmaking and art, vastly extending our audience all over the world. Expenses $13,767.
