About this organization
Mission
In partnership with schools, we focus on the development of the whole girl. She learns to value herself, take risks, and discover and develop her inherent strengths. The combination of long-lasting mentoring relationships, a pro-girl environment, and research-based programming equips girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers, and grow up healthy, educated, and independent. Informed by girls and their families, we also advocate for legislation and policies to increase opportunities and rights for all girls.
About
Schenectady after school program - This free after-school program provides girls in grades K-12 with a variety of educational programs in six areas: leadership and community action, career and life planning, sports and adventure, self-reliance and life skills, culture and heritage, and health and sexuality. Programs are offered Monday through Friday during the school year, serving an average of 200 girls each year. The majority of girls attending the Schenectady main center are from the highest need neighborhoods in Schenectady (Hamilton Hill, Vale and Mont Pleasant) where poverty and crime are most heavily concentrated, placing these girls at risk. Examples of programs include: Operation Smart, which provides girls with basic knowledge of math and science and encourages them to question why and how things work; Girls Get the Message, which encourages girls to think analytically about how media messages are constructed and how these messages reflect social values; and Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy, which increases girls' awareness and knowledge and learn to identify ways and reasons to avoid early pregnancy. The program also helps foster girls' communication skills and provides basic health education.
