The main purpose/service of the society is to hold an annual meeting that brings together in one forum scientists from the broad range of disciplines that contribute to vision science, including visual psychophysics, neuroscience, computational vision and cognitive psychology. For 2018, 1,978 scientists attended the annual meeting which was held May 18-23, 2018 in St. Pete, Florida at the Tradewinds Island Resort. There were 1,402 presentations given at this meeting. The society also gives out 20 travel awards, $500 each to graduate students, based on an assessment of the applicant's abstract submission, their supervisor's statement and on the scientific merit of the work to be presented at the meeting. VSS also awards a young investigator award each year to an outstanding visual scientist. The winner is chosen by an outside committee of five established visual scientists selected from the VSS membership (appointed by the board of directors). The young investigator awardee is given $1,000.
