From January 12-February 10, 2018 New York City Players premiered Richard Maxwells new play Paradiso. The production had a sold-out run at Greene Naftali for 18 performances, free to the general public. The work was critically acclaimed by press with Ben Brantley from The New York Times describing the show as "summoning a world beyond human existence with heartbreaking eloquence," and calling Maxwell's work, "quintessentially American" and "an art of extreme purification." Hilton Als of The New Yorker called Maxwell's work "essential theater that explores the myth and the mundane.In addition, NYCP continued its educational summer activities: Incoming Theater Divisiona program that engages immigrant New Yorkers in a series of clinics to create a dynamic public performance from their original writings took place January-June 2018 and it was the first year that NYCP commissioned 4 short plays written by 6 of the programs 13 total participants. The production, Immigration Stories, was presented at the historic Performing Garage in Manhattan and received two sold-out performances on June 29-30, 2018. Admission was free to the general public. In the summer, Maxwell was an artist-in residency at the Chinati in Marfa, Texas. The residency offered an opportunity to develop new work as well as introduce two past New York City Players productions
