FY19 marked Vineyard Theatres 36th season, and our 30th year at the 138-seat Gertrude and Irving Dimson Theatre in New York Citys Union Square. This year was one of The Vineyards most popular and critically successful in history, with mainstage productions including GOOD GRIEF by Ngozi Anyanwu (which was recorded as an audio play and will soon be available on the streaming service Audible); Daddy by Jeremy O. Harris, our best-attended production to date; and DO YOU FEEL ANGER?, by Mara Nelson-Greenberg. Vineyard programming served 20,283 individuals in FY19.In FY19, The Vineyards education programs offered at no cost to students or schools and designed to inspire learning and self-expression and develop life skills served 623 local public high school students. Our Mainstage Access Program served 476 students (at the Academy for Software Engineering, Chelsea Career and Technical Education High School, Gramercy Arts High School, New Visions Charter School for the Humanities and the Union Square Academy for Health Sciences) with matinee performances bookended by in-class workshops with teaching artists. Our Theatre Intensive during students spring break in April served 13 students with three days of hands-on workshops and a trip to BEAUTIFUL: The Carole King Musical on Broadway. This season, The Vineyard continued its partnership with Developing Artists to administer educational programs and produce the REBEL VERSES Youth Arts Festival, featuring 77 student performers and audiences of 622. Thirty-three students developed and performed their own original work in the Vineyard Theatre Student Ensemble in FY19. The Vineyard hosted 24 professional internships this year.The Vineyards ongoing new play development programs offer artists at all stages of their careers tailored dramaturgical and practical support in the form of workshops, readings, and residencies. In FY19, we produced a reading of HEROES OF THE FOURTH TURNING by Will Arbery, and workshops of TUVALU by Antoinette Nwandu, NEIGHBORS by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, THE DARGER REQUIEM by Martha Clarke, and WHITE GIRL IN DANGER by Michael R. Jackson, three of which are currently under consideration for full production in FY22/23. Our developmental Lab production this year was THIS LAND WAS MADE by Tori Sampson. The Vineyards Paula Vogel Playwriting Award is granted annually to a gifted emerging playwright and includes a cash prize and a Vineyard residency; our 2018 awardee was Jeremy O. Harris. Whitney White was named winner of our two-year Susan Stroman Directing Award, which also offers a cash prize and residency.Among The Vineyards many notable world premieres are two Pulitzer Prize-winning dramas, Paula Vogels HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE and Edward Albees THREE TALL WOMEN, and five productions that have transferred to Broadway John Kander and Fred Ebbs THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, Hunter Bell and Jeff Bowens [title of show], Bobby Lopez, Jeff Marx and Jeff Whittys AVENUE Q, Nicky Silvers THE LYONS, and most recently INDECENT by Paula Vogel. Our work has won 2 Pulitzer Prizes, 5 Tony Awards, 23 Obie Awards, 2 Oppenheimer Awards, and numerous New York Drama Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel, and Drama Desk Awards. The Vineyard is proud to have been honored with a special Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Body of Work, a Drama Desk Award for Artistic Excellence, and the first-ever Ross Wetzsteon Obie Award for support of artists and creativity in the theatre.
