Lotus Music & Dance is a cultural and educational institution dedicated to the teaching, performance and preservation of the dance and music traditions of all world cultures. The activities by our master artists foster artistic development, as well as cultural and social exchange. Our intention is to celebrate and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures of the world.In 2018-2019, LOTUS served over 21,137 people. LOTUS produced performances and events which attracted a total of 8,735 attendees. LOTUS artists participated in 34 events that were presented by other organizations. These workshops and performances reached a combined audience of approximately 12,402 people. This number includes 21 programs in ten public schools, reaching approximately 4,827 school children. Our audiences represent virtually every ethnic community in New York City as well as dance aficionados and scholars of Asian, African, Hispanic and Native American culture. Major LOTUS events in 2018-2019 included Lotus produced performances such as World Dance Festival: Dancing Across Cultural Borders at Manhattan Movement Arts Center, World Dance Passport: Travel the World Through Dance at the George Washington Educational Campus funded by the New York City Councils Cultural Immigrant Initiative and the Seventeenth Annual Drums Along the Hudson: A Native American and Multicultural Celebration. This annual event, co-sponsored with the NYC Parks Dept. was held on June 23rd, at Inwood Hill Park with over 60 native dancers in full regalia who danced to the resounding host drums of Heyna Second Sons and Silver Cloud. Also featured were international drum and dance groups on the main stage including the Haudenosaunee Onondaga Singers and Dancers, Kapulli Huehuetlahtolli Aztec Dancers & Drummers, Parijat Desai Dance in the Round, Dancing Crane Georgian Dance and Theater, Flamenco y Sol, Kinding Sindaw Filipino Tribal Dance, the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers, Silver Cloud Singers and Dancers, the Childrens Cultural Center of Native America, Mohawk Elder Tom Porter, Heyna Second Sons, Healing Drum Circle, and featuring the Lotus 30th Anniversary Photo Exhibition. Our Environmental Tent hosted nine participating organizations including USDA-APHIS PPQ Asian Longhorned Beetle Eradication Program, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, Plant Powered Metro, the Coalition for Healthy School Food, the US Census Bureau, NYC Fire Dept., Green Mountain Energy, NYC Indigenous Mobile Library and Shumei New York Center. The event attracted over 8,000 participants. We also reached an additional 2,668 children and school teachers in the public schools through our Native American Assembly Programs. LOTUSs programs gave over 185 artists opportunities to present their art throughout the year. LOTUS had ten programs appear on Channel 56, QPTVs Fade to Black, reaching approximately 200,000 people. LOTUS strives to be truly global in outlook and programming and has been of special service to under-represented groups in a way unmatched by other cultural organizations. LOTUS productions have given exposure to rare and exceptional artists, bolstered cultural preservation and reinforced pride in world music and dance traditions.
