Mission

The Hastings Center addresses social and ethical issues in health care, science, and technology. Through our projects and publications, The Hastings Center shapes ideas that influence key opinion leaders, including health policy-makers, regulators, health care professionals, lawyers, legislators, and judges. Our analyses also influence professional practice: from end-of-life care to psychiatric practice to immigrant health care, we have helped to shape the standards of practice adopted by physicians, nurses, and lawyers. Founded in 1969 by philosopher Daniel Callahan and psychoanalyst Willard Gaylin, The Hastings Center is the oldest independent, nonpartisan, interdisciplinary research institute of its kind in the world.

About

The Hastings Center's researchers investigated a diverse range of ethical, legal, and policy questions related to science, medicine, and health. Project topics included advances in genetics such as gene editing and genetic testing; aging and care at the end of life; aging and health policy; the development of autonomous machines; the role of values in assessing the impact of technologies; and public deliberation on new technologies. We produced analysis and formulated advice on these questions, which we disseminated to specialist and non-specialist audiences through the publication of 2 books, 4 reports, more than 85 articles, book chapters, and commentaries. In addition, we offered over 80 talks and lectures across the United States, Canada, UK, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, as well as dozens of interviews with journalists at national and international media outlets. Our researchers also served on numerous advisory committees, including for the White House's Office of Science, Technology and Policy, World Economic Forum, National Academies of Science, City of New York, March of Dimes, and the editorial boards of dozens of academic journals. This research was supported by grants, contracts, and donations from 15 public and private funders, including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, John Templeton Foundation, Dongahue Foundation, and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).
