About

Grants to artists: These unrestricted, $40,000 cash awards are intended to provide recipients with the financial means to engage in whatever artistic endeavors they wish to pursue. Recipients are chosen annually through a confidential nomination and selection process. The foundation invites dozens of artists and arts professionals to serve as nominators and to propose anonymously one exceptional individual, collective, or performing group whom they believe deserves and would benefit from a substantial award. Then, a separate selection committee' of artists and arts professionals selects grantees based on the merit and imaginativeness of their work and the impact such recognition and support might have at this point in their careers. In 2018, a total of 18 grants were made to individual artists. Within grants to artists are 5 endowed awards, the Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Dorothea Tanning and C.D. Wright awards (all annual), the Merce Cunningham award (biennial) and one annually supported award, the Cy Twombly award for poetry, are made through grants to artists, in memory of their namesakes. In 2018, 5 named grants were respectively made to individual artists.
