Mission

VIBS' mission is to assist the survivors of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault, prevent the incidence of these crimes through education and services.

About

Established in 1976, Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk ('VIBS') has been a pioneer in the domestic violence and rape crisis movements. VIBS' mission is to assist the survivors of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault, elder abuse, child abuse, human trafficking and veterans who are experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder on military sexual traumas. It aims to prevent the incidence of these crimes through education and services, and to raise community awareness of the need for justice and compassion for victims. Because VIBS envisions a community free of all forms of abuse, it advocates for societal changes that will eliminate or decrease domestic and sexual violence, elder abuse and human trafficking. Programs and accomplishments include: 1. Hotline counseling, intervention, information and referrals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 2. Individual and group counseling to victims of all ages. 3. Specialized services for children who witness domestic violence as well as for children who have been sexually abused; include trauma-informed counseling, drama and art therapy, and child care play groups. 4. Specialized groups for adolescent victims, including satellite services with community non-profit partners. 5. Court advocacy and legal services. 6. An elder abuse program that includes home visits, counseling, advocacy, and prevention. 7. Social service advocacy and assistance to promote economic self-sufficiency. 8. A wide array of educational and preventive services aimed at students from elementary school through college; community organizations; and professionals. 9. The Rape Crisis Program coordinates the Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner ('SAFE') program for services of rape and sexual assault.
