Mission

Mission: Starfinder uses soccer to inspire social change and transform the lives of youth in underserved communities, one kid at a time. Vision: A Philadelphia region where the playing field is level, and all kids are thriving. Starfinder is a sports-based youth development organization that combines soccer with mentoring, education, and leadership development, inspiring youth to assess and develop their talents despite social and economic obstacles and helping them achieve their full potential. We use soccer as the catalyst to transform the lives of youth from underserved neighborhoods through deep programming, supportive mentorship, and a tight-knit community.

About

Starfinder serves approximately 900 youth annually at its facility and neighborhood sites. Programs include: an intensive, year-round high school program; summer camps and neighborhood outreach to younger children; and a growing array of middle school programs, including after school clinics and weekend leagues. Soccer is the magnet; success in school, in the community, and in pursuit of higher education and employment is the goal. One hundred percent of Starfinder's high school seniors have graduated high school and 89% have continued on to post-secondary education (compared to averages of 69% and 55%, respectively, for the Philadelphia School District.) ** Starfinder's community of supporters includes individual donors, businesses and corporations, and private foundations. Our unique fundraising events include Cocktails with a Kick!, a cocktail party on our indoor turf field; and Starfinder Cups, corporate-sponsored adult soccer tournaments and networking events. We also rely on the stable unrestricted income generated by our facility (e.g., field rentals, birthday parties, and similar uses.) during non program hours to fund Starfinder's mission and program services. ** Volunteers assist with program needs, events, and facility projects throughout the year. Annually, 4-5 Americorps and VISTA service members (through the National Civilian Community Corps) dedictate a year of service to add capacity to Starfinder's programs and operations. ** Starfinder is in the midst of The Campaign for Starfinder to invest in critical facility renovations, build organizational resilience, and expand capacity to serve more youth through low/no-cost, high quality programs. FY19 revenues include $512,000 raised by the campaign.
